Is anyone here on iron supplements?  My doctor put me on them today but I'm worried after reading the side effects.  It says to let your doctor know if you have any intestinal issues.  Of course he knows about the UC.  Is it really worth adding just one more medication to what I'm already taking??

I just started Ferrous Sulphate 2 weeks ago. Don't believe it has caused me much grief. I've been having abdominal issues for some time now so can't say I noticed a difference since taking the pills.

Only difference I've noticed is the darker stools.

Which one are you taking? I don't take iron supplements now but I have in the past. At first I started on Ferrous Sulfate but eventually that stopped agreeing with me and then I started on SlowFE which is much easier on the gut.

I take iron and I don't think it is too hard on me. I notice darker stools too. My doctor warned about constipation but I've never had issues with that.
Diagnosed with mild proctitis in March 2007: Treated with Canasa (as needed)
December 08: Began treating with Asacol 400mg (9/day) + Canasa 2x/day - Anemic
May 09: Off Canasa, taking Asacol (9/day)
Back on Canasa every other night + Asacol (9/day) + Probiotics + Iron
Reducing to 6 Asacol/day + Canasa at night + Probiotics + Iron - So far so good!!!

I am on Ferrous Sulfate pills - 3 per day. The first day they gave me a stomach ache, but after that I was fine.

I am on iron pills 3x a day too ... stool color changes but that's it. Being anemic is no picnic and can really take a toll on your health. And since UC gives me mostly loose stools, there has been no constipation - actually almost normal!

I am on Ferrous Sulfate. 325mg per day. All my irontest results (TIBC, ferritin) were as low as you can get in the "normal" range.

My B12 came back at 586. I didn't fast for this test so I dont know if that affected the results or not. Dr. says no.

I am on ferrous gluconate, not sulphate. Othwer than a bit of stomachiness, no problems. What is the diff between sulphate and gluconate anyway?
23 years of UC which started after quitting smoking. In and out of flares which are usually triggered by antibiotics. Latest issue is endless diarrhea without blood or mucous.

iron suppliments actually 'excerbate' ulcerative colitis and inflammation of the colon.

you can take em but they're not good for UC.  catch 22.
ive been made to have iron infusions now instead of taking iron pills.
steph - 32 - female - gold coast australia - UC since 2000
severe UC in descending colon and sigmoid colon ONLY
mesalazine granules 3g x1 a day (much nicer than a million tablets a day)
prednisolone 25mg x1 a day (ick ick and did i say ick?)
enteric coated fish oil -omega 3 (so they get all the way to my colon)
vitamin D3 x1 a day
tumeric capsules - if i remember to take the bloody things.
i still eat what i want, when i want, if i feel like eating at all :(

My doctor has me on the iron gluconate as well. They don't bother me at all. He said the gluconate version is easier on the guts than the sulfate ones. It's isn't as efficient, but it doesn't upset the stomach.

kazygirl, what's it like taking the infusions? When I started on the pills, my doctor said if they didn't work or upset my stomach too much, she would try infusions but they are painful so she wanted to try the pills first.
