I figured it was time to chime in. :) my name is angela, im 20 years old. i was diagnosed with severe uc in august 2008. Im on asacol right now 3 3x a day. and i have been on pred. 3 times. the last time it didnt help. anyone have some advice? im still having issues such as mucous, slight blood, cramps, urgency... it seems so much better than before but not good enough. should i be switching meds? or is this normal? i hope you dont mind me jumping to questions. i am so excited to keep learning about this sucky UC lol.

Hi AP..welcome to the forum.

My only suggestion is to get thee back to the GI and ask why you haven't been on rectal meds to try as well as the Asacol rather than put on pred 3 times over the past year.

Not that it doesn't work, but you at least should try them.

Yeah, UC sucks.

How are you eating? Sometimes an adjustment in diet can help some symptoms of discomfort, gas, stool consistency..etc.

Are you on any probiotics?

You might also consider to use fibre supplements with meals...they can help bulk/fluff up the stool which in turn can help lessen transit time giving you some relief of frequency.

Oh, antispasmodics (I use dicyclomine) help with the cramping discomfort.

Hi and welcome to HW :) What is the extent of your Uc? Is it thru out your whole colon? Sometimes knowing that we can suggest other options with you.

Got to agree with Q on the antispasmodics. I use Bentyl and it really helps me tremendously. It makes me a bit tired though but it's worth it. :)

I have pancolitis as well and my doc started me on 4 asacol 3x per day (so 12 pills total). I was also using rowasa enemas nightly, but now that I'm in remission I've started to go to every other night. I really think the rowasa helped heal the lower part of my colon, so I agree with qunicy that you should try it. As for diet, you just need to figure out what causes you problems and what doesn't. So far, I haven't identified any food in particular that bothers me. I do stay completely away from MSG and try to avoid preservatives.
Symptoms began in November 2008, ~4 weeks after giving birth to my son.
Eased for ~3 weeks in December, possibly b/c of probiotic use?
Returned in January 2009 (with a vengeance), diagnosed with pancolitis on January 30.
Currently taking Asacol (400mg 4 pills 3x daily), Rowasa nightly, Culturelle probiotic, and Zoloft (25 mg).

I third and fourth the rectal meds. I don't get as much relief with the rowasa, but the hydrocortisone enemas are wonderful, thick, and give me relief by the next morning. That seems to be the one thing that will consistently help me when needed. Lomitil/Bentyl great too. Will make you a little drowsy as mentioned above, but the trade off is worth it.

I'd probably start with a 5ASA enema (I use generic Rowasa). The enemas reach a lot higher up in the colon than suppositories do. There are also steroid enemas, foams, and suppositories, but I'd give the 5ASA a chance before trying steroid.

The Crohn's and Colitis Foundation of America website (ccfa.org) has a lot of good info on the meds used to treat UC and CD. I suggest you go there and read about them.
