I've had ulcerative proctitis for ten and a half years.  Seems like my flares are getting closer together even with my taking Colazal and 6MP.  I enjoyed an eight month remission but last Sunday I noticed small ulcers in my mouth and mucus in my stool.....this is usually a precursor for me.  I immediately started the Cort enemas but am trying to avoid prednisone.  My condition usually spirals downward with diarrhea, tenesmus and bleeding.  So far my bowel movements are formed and I only went once today with no blood.  I do have pressure in the rectum however.  Any suggestions? sad

Hospitalized (2nd time) in May 2008
Update 11/03/08...finally in remission!!  Hope I don't jinx myself.  Off the prednisone since 11/01/08...now see if I can stay off for longer than two weeks.  Other meds: 6MP (75 mgm), colazal (6 per day), Benicar and Toprol (high blood pressure meds), Probiotic (2 per day), fish oil capsule and multi-vitamin and calcium with vitamin D.

yep...rectal meds.

no blood doesn't mean you're not flaring, and the diarrhea would mean that the inflammation is high in the rectum and higher.

If you've started the cortenemas...that's a good thing.

You could try fibre supplements to bulk/soften/fluff the stool....

You can also ask for antispasmodics to help with the rectal discomfort....

Hope you feel better soon...you're doing what you need to do, so that's awesome. You should see some improvement over a few days...hang tough.

Sorry to hear this Christine.  Hope you can get it under control FAST!  I am still hanging in there with 50 mg. 6 MP and 10 mg. prednisone until I see the specialist June 18.  Still having blood on stool but no diarrhea, little discomfort left side but only 2 or 3 BM's each morning.  I keep trying 75 mg 6 MP but can't tolerate it even one day.

Also, I WISH so much I could use the rectal meds.  I have tried so many and nothing helps - mostly makes it worse down there with swelling, sore, etc.  Can retain suppositories but enemas no more and foam only about 1/2 maybe if lucky.  Administering them is a nightmare but I keep trying and hoping!

Good luck in getting back to where you were.
