Hi there,
I am new to this site and have only recently been diagnosed with proctitis. I had my first flare up about 4 months ago at which point i was losing a lot of blood and had really bad abdominal pain. My doctor placed me on a 6 week course of prednisolone along with asacol 800mg 3 to be taken daily. It seemed as if I went into remission and even after coming off the steroids, I was ok. However about a month ago I started suffering from severe headaches that would last all day and not respond to over the counter painkillers. Ive had this continuous headache for over a month now and it doesn't seem to be easing. I know that headache is a side effect of asacol but is it possible to present after so long? If it was the asacol causing the headache, would the onset of the headache not have been immediate as opposed to 3 months later? I am currently having another flare up and am back on prednisolone with asacol. The headaches are quite severe but I am somewhat scared to stop taking the asacol incase this would prevent me going into remission once again. Can anyone please comment and possibly suggest a course of action? I would appreciate any help right now as I really am clueless. Apologies for the long post and look forward to your replies.

There is not much I can really suggest except drink plenty of water. I ve never had side effects from asacol, and that is new to me that it can give you head aces. Have you tried changing diet to ease the cramps. I tried combination eating and that really has helped. I have been in no abdominal pain for 3 months. Nock on wood. Sorry this is all I can do for you.

Headaches could be from the asacol. Asacol never did anything for me, so stopping it wouldn't change my flare any. I always get a pred withdrawel headache too. That can be somewhat severe at times.

Headache could be from many things though. I had a lady come into my office last week that was on imitrex twice a day with migraines for 20 years every single day as long as she could remember. I adjusted her once and she has had 1 headache in 8 days now. Took imitrex on that one day. Just figure out the cause.

I would highly suggest some of the steroid enemas. I sound like a broken record on that, but GI docs are failing alot of people in here by not prescribing that. Should always have those in the cabinet ready to go when a flare starts.
