It's day 12. I had a little bleeding come back intermittantly, but it's not bad. Right now I'm struggling with dehydration. I am contantly drinking different juices and water to try and stay hydrated, but I am losing the battle. When I really feel like I'm getting in trouble, I even supplement with gatorade, which I know is bad for me because of the corn syrup. I don't know what else to do. If this keeps up I'm going to be back on prednisone or IV fluids. What sorts of tricks do you use to hydrate your body?

Are you eating enough salt? Salt will help you to retain the fluids you are drinking. Pretzels are a good choice and easy to carry around. Have you tried other hydrating beverages other than gatorade? The one that I prefer is Vitalyte. It's lower in sugar and higher in electrolytes. It's a far superior hydrating beverage than the commercial brands. You can purchase it in powder form at www.vitalyte.com or buy it at REI stores.

Wow, thanks SueBear for that great recommendation of Vitalyte! My husband is diabetic and can't drink the sugary vitamin drinks but lacks electrolytes and potassium, so this might just be the ticket for him.

Carol,

You might want to recommend the citrus flavor to your husband. It has the least amount of sugar and very little flavoring.

Oh, and I might add that Vitalyte is the ONLY hydrating beverage sold in the Grand Canyon. In fact that is where I was first introduced to it on a hike to the bottom of the canyon. It saved my colonless butt from dehydration; I was pretty dehydrated when I took my first 32oz. I perked up pretty much immediately. I use it exclusively on my 100-200 mile hikes as well as any endurance activity in the high Sierras.
