i got vicodin for my kidney stones a while back... i take a half of one on long long car trips every now and then

i also got small hydrocodone pills when i went to the hospital for my last flare... i took those for pain every once in a while, but I never really got addicted to any of those.. just know that they're good in times of needing to be okay for a long trip.

I usually try tylenol or my antispasmodics first... or waiting it out.

im on oxycontin for my UC pain.
i cant take anything less... i was on morphine in the hospital even.

i take half a pill every 4 hours or im screwed. the pain is excrutiating. i actually throw up from the pain, pretty much 70% of the times i go to the toilet. it sucks. but i have to have them or i cant move at all.

and dont worry about addiction.
ive done the oxycontin thing now a few different times during bad flares.

i tell myself, i dont want to get hoooked and proceed with caution. i dont even take whole dose, cuz i dont like to be loopy,
but coming off them is easy.
just take them now to avoid the pain, and when your done, just cut them in half for a few weeks, then quarters for a few weeks and then bam! your done.
you cant stop them overnight, but it doesnt take too long if you ease / taper off them.

avoiding pain now is more important than worrying about addiction later.

plus, i find that cuz i've taken them for pain, its a whole different thing than being addicted to them for recreational use.
dont worry please. this disease is too much on its own to worry about these things before you need to.
worry about it later... and even then it wont be that bad.
trust me, i have experience.

hello kitty... people with UC aren't supposed to take anything with Ibuprofen in it... it's an NSAID... it hurts us more.

but anyways... Kazy.. if your pain is so bad that you have to take those every 4 hours... why don't you try a different medication? I see that you just got off prednisone... why if you're still in a flare?? What kind of UC do you have....do you take any rectal meds to try and battle the flare?

I know that we are not supose to take Ibprofin, but at the the time I didn't. My GP perscribed it to me for when I had some nerve damage in my leg. Sometimes I just don't think doctors read your profile. They just dish out the drugs.

I think they oxycontin helps me with the diarea as well as the pain.

Yea, ibiprophen and tylenol are Really powerful on our digestive tracts with the disease/condition we have...

Oh and by the way, I am basically in remission right now.. no diarea, no blood, formed stools, etc. etc.

my pain is from damaged nerve endings and nerves in my abdominal area.. I guess my IBD was so bad the nerves etc. became damaged and weakened, wich is why I Still get my cramps, cus my colonosopies showed no ulcers or inflammation, so do my blood tests and my ct scans.

Sometimes they prescribe neurontin for nerve pain. It isn't addicting as far as I know. They prescribe it to diabetics all the time for neuropathy from diabetes.

Hi - I know virtually everyone else on here said not to worry about the pills, but my pain pill addiction that began with legal prescriptions from my GI set me on a 5 year battle with addiction.  I went through rehab and am now clean, but dealing with this pain sober is really tough.  If you think you have a problem and want to talk I can send you my email address.

i have been on different meds.  so many different meds its crazy.

i am back on 40mg of prednisolone at the moment.
waiting on blood tests to start imuran.
taking 3g of mesalazine granules.
tumeric, fish oil, vitamin d3, and various other things including 6 hour iron infusions from the massive blood loss.

ive tried all sorts of pain killers and the pain is bad. even with the oxycontin.
what medication do you suggest?  by the way?

my last flare went away with pred and it cleared up until i quit smoking and the week after my last pred pill it came back.
so there you go.
i dont know the state of my colon at the moment cuz i just started flaring really bad last few weeks.  but it feels like most of it is pretty bad.  but i dont know for sure. i just know how i feel.

and who cares what junkies say. im not a junkie and people with serious illness who need pain management aren't junkies.
i was worried about addiction at first, but the pain is bad, and i iwll deal with addiction later rather than pain now thank you.
and after doing this 3-4 times already with oxycontins, i am not addicted to them and have not had a problem stoppign them completely when i was finished and in remission.   so im not worried anymore.
although i still dont take a whole pill as prescribed every 4 hours (i keep it at half pill) its because i dont want it to get worse and have to take more than one. now i have some leeway if its super duper bad i can take up to the proper dose.

whatever.  maybe im stupid.
but dont tell me to try new meds when ive tried everything ever prescribed to me thanks.

Steph, I think we've asked this in the past but have you thought about having your colon removed? If I was in so much pain and misery from my Uc I think I would have my colon out. But then again, after flaring for almost all of my 17 years I would be so ready to do it if they offered! :)

I have only a handful of times that I had to rely on pain killers and I used Darvocet. I am severely allergic to codeine so that rules out many pain meds. In fact codeine sent me to the ER via ambulance about 1 1/2 years ago. But I am in remission right now and I still get cramping pain. I take Bentyl for the spasms and it works pretty good. My GI thinks that I may have IBS in addition to Uc. I had a scope and it came out clean but I still have D and cramping. Have you ever tried an anti-spasmodic?

ive tried it all red. anti spasmodics, mellow pain killers, muscle relaxers, everything.
even the oxycontin doesnt always help.
just now got off the can and im in pain.

i am not removing my colon thanks.
you all can go ahead, but im not there yet sorry.

the last 2 flares i didnt need any pain killers at all. it was lots of blood and D, but no pain.
this time, lots of pain.
so its different everytime.

but no, sorry, i want to keep my colon for as long as possible. :)

why dont you have yours removed  red? 17 years of flaring? thats crazy. why havent they offered if its that bad?
i thought 10 years off and on was bad, but 17, omg!  you poor thing.
would you really do it in a second? if they offered you tomorrow, would you have the surgery?

Woah...Kazy... I wasn't trying to insult you. I giggled at that line.. I know you didn't mean it that way.. it's just where my mind went..sorry?

I asked those questions cuz at the time I didn't see an updated signature...forgive me? I had no idea what your history was.. that's why I was asking. Now that I know I'm sorry you've had such a tough time... I wasn't aware that you've tried so many medicines okay? Next time please don't snap at me .. I promise I was only trying to help.

BTW I would NEVER call you a junkie or anyone else on here for that matter... even if they did have a problem with addiction. I'm not rude.

Kazy.. please stop attacking me? I wasn't attacking you. It's just what I thought when I read that line ...forgive me. I DO NOT AND WILL NEVER think being in pain is funny.. I know from EXPERIENCE that UC is VERY painful and that sometimes pain pills that should work don't. I KNOW it's serious.. I didn't ever call those people junkies either... and some people DO when depressed ... turn to drugs and alcohol to relieve the pain (or for the high...to take away from reality) That's JUST where my mind went when I read that...don't attack me.. I didn't attack you.

Steph, I did ask my GI once if I could have my colon taken out. But he wasn't ready for me to give up yet. I'm sure if I persued it that I could find a doctor to do it. My GI's reasoning is that only half my colon is involved. I was seriously at the end of my rope and I decided to give the 6mp a bit longer - at the time I was on it for 2 years. And then all of a sudden, I was in remission. I have only had a few short lived remissions in the 17 years and I think that when I flare again, not if but when, then I may persue the surgery angle again. You bet I was getting tired! And yes, even while in remission, if they asked me if I wanted my colon out, I would do it - seriously. I would rather live with a bag or even a Jpouch then suffer thru more years of pain and suffering. To me it's about the quality of life. I am on the second to the last line of medication and I refuse to do Remicade. So if things get bad again...well I will cross that road when I get to it. :)

I can't really say I have pain with my UC.  Maybe because it is proctitis.  Just a feeling of urgency.  Now, last year I did have pain and was hospitalized for ten days with this but the pain also radiated down into my legs.  The doctor prescribed Hydrocodone and I think I only took three pills out of the entire bottle.  Maybe I have a higher tolerance for pain.

I do take naproxen for my joint pain, with my doctor's blessing. Otherwise, I make do with tylenol. I try to never take addictive drugs for chronic things, because the nature of opiates is that you have to keep taking more and more due to habituation. I take percocet, vicodan or the like only after surgery for a limited time.
