I've only read two threads this morning and am astonished at what I'm reading. Really, folks? I understand debating, but not bickering or flaming other members. Your opinion does count....but don't knock people over the head with it.

Remember; if you think by putting other characters in your cuss words are legal here; think again. It's not tolerated and we do have younger people here who don't need to read that.

Please everyone, go back and read through the forum rules again. The mods have a lot of threads to read through and we asked you to help us since we are a little short handed as of late. So please...help us.
Carol

Is d-a-m-n a cussword? It seems pretty innocent compared to what came afterward. We should be able to d-a-m-n our blasted ailment! Saying "darn it" is boring & corny as Kansas in August. / Old Hat (30 yrs with left-sided UC ... [etc.])

Then let us be corny. If the word censor won't let you put it down then it doesn't belong here.

Old Hat,
I am a Kansasan by birth and choice.  I would appreciate if you did not disrespect me by using the statement "boring and corny as Kansas in August."

It is my hope that members will be respectful enough to articulate themselves in such a way that it expresses their feelings to the appropriate extent without offending others. I am not saying we need to be all sweetness and light, but it might be a good idea to comport oneself with dignity and respect. Especially if you wish to be treated with dignity and respect.

Please remember it is a family friendly forum and if everyone would not be ok with saying it in front of a classroom full of 13 year olds, your boss's boss, and a person you deeply respect then do not do it.

That being said I believe there are times when it is appropriate expression, but here is not it.

I giggle at the thought of not saying something in front of a classroom full of 13 year olds. Have you been in a middle school lately? I mean, most of them swear like truckers when they don't think they'll get in trouble for doing so (and a lot of them do, and just don't care!)...most of them probably say things that would make ME blush, and I'm don't blush that easily!

Actually I did teach for 3 years (in a public middle school, highly populated by military dependents, before I went to teach at the university level) and you are "talking" with someone who does swear like sailor she is, but I also realize that there are times that it is and is not appropriate.

The rules state it is not appropriate.

I'm not arguing that it's appropriate to swear on here (nor in any classroom)...it just struck me as funny b/c 13 year olds seem to live for the opportunity to swear! Any teacher who would swear in front of that age kid would likely be hero-worshipped. Again, not appropriate, but sadly, true.

Yeah, now that I have a baby, I really need to watch what I say, too. Especially while driving. My cussing gets quite, um, creative at times! :)

And Carol, what's mergatroid????

Oh, wow (sorry I keep posting!) but I just read the thing about things not being posted if they're not work safe...there's no WAY I'd talk to my boss about the state of my poo! He's a retired Army Colonel (26 years of service) and I can't IMAGINE saying "Guess what, Steve?! I only pooped TWO TIMES yesterday. And it wasn't urgent! And it actually stayed together when I flushed!"

Okay, I was wondering the same thing, so from Yahoo Answers:

'Heavens to Murgatroyd' is American in origin and dates from the mid 20th century. The expression was popularized by the cartoon character Snagglepuss - a regular on the Yogi Bear Show in the 1960s, and is a variant of the earlier 'heavens to Betsy'.

The first use of the phrase wasn't by Snagglepuss but comes from the 1944 film Meet the People. It was spoken by Bert Lahr, best remembered for his role as the Cowardly Lion in The Wizard of Oz. Snagglepuss's voice was patterned on Lahr's, along with the 'heavens to Murgatroyd' line. Daws Butler's vocal portrayal of the character was so accurate that when the cartoon was used to promote Kellogg Cereals, Lahr sued and made the company distance him from the campaign by giving a prominent credit to Butler.

As with Betsy, we have no idea who Murgatroyd was. The various spellings of the name - as Murgatroid, Mergatroyd or Mergatroid tend to suggest that it wasn't an actual surname. While it is doubtful that the writers of Meet The People (Sig Herzig and Fred Saidy) were referring to an actual person, they must have got the name from somewhere.

No fewer than ten of the characters in Gilbert and Sullivan's comic opera Ruddigore (1887) are baronets surnamed "Murgatroyd", eight of whom (or is that which?) are ghosts. Herzig and Saidy were well versed in the works of the musical theatre and that plethora of Murgatroyds would have been known to them.

Where then did the librettist Sir William Gilbert get the name? It seems that Murgatroyd has a long history as a family name in the English aristocracy. In his genealogy The Murgatroyds of Murgatroyd, Bill Murgatroyd states that, in 1371, a constable was appointed for the district of Warley in Yorkshire. He adopted the name of Johanus de Morgateroyde - literally John of Moor Gate Royde or 'the district leading to the moor'.

Whether the Murgatroyd name took that route from Yorkshire to Jellystone Park we can't be certain. Unless there's a Betsy Murgatroyd hiding in the archives, that's as close as we are likely to get to a derivation.

Ooooh, instead of "Heaven to mergatroid" we should say "Heavens to megaturd."

And really, I'm sorry I keep posting on this thread!

"Corny as Kansas in August" comes from a song in the musical "South Pacific" which is rather famous! Some people need to lighten up ... I've read many a post by Quincy, who already apologized, but if there were cuss words in them, I never noticed and I definitely admire her use of @ followed by 2 of the same consonant. She has a mischievous, creative bent at times, which is not only informative to UCers, but also fun to read. We need to have some fun here 'n' there! The Forum word censor is strange because it stops compound words ending in n-a-z-i; we discussed this in another thread a while back. / Old Hat (30 yrs with left-sided UC ... [etc.])
