I'm presently in a flare which started a few weeks ago.  I guess you could say I am gradually getting worse.  I am sure the sigmoidoscope didn't help my situation much on Friday.  Anyway, I am bleeding, not much but I can see it on the paper.  I have urgency (which is REALLY uncomfortable, as most of you know).  I only had about four bowel movements today, if you could call them that.  I am watching my diet like a hawk, low residue.  You could say my question is to you sufferers out there....should I start a short course in prednisone?  Only thing is, it raises my blood pressure to alarming limits...at least it did last year, 210/110 even with my BP meds.  Or should I just try to tough it out and give the Cort enemas more time? sad

Meds as of June 09: Colazal (6 per day), 6MP (50 mgm), Probiotic (upped to 3 per day), Fish oil capsule, calcium, multivitamin, Cort enema nightly, Canasa in morning.  Also taking Benicar and Toprol to control high blood pressure.  Getting old is a b****.

I am not sure because I don't have a lot of experience but I would imagine it won't get better without a little help? Mine never has anyway. Can you try increasing your Colazal dose? It may be better to try to get things to clear up now rather than waiting until it is worse but you never know, it could improve without taking drugs. You're probably going to have to feel it out and see if you're getting better or worse. Maybe it seems worse from the scope but it will improve in a day or two. I hope you get better quickly.
Diagnosed with mild proctitis in March 2007: Treated with Canasa (as needed)
December 08: Began treating with Asacol 400mg (9/day) + Canasa 2x/day - Anemic
May 09: Off Canasa, taking Asacol (9/day)
Back on Canasa every other night + Asacol (9/day) + Probiotics + Iron
Reducing to 6 Asacol/day + Canasa + Probiotics + Iron - So far so good!!! -SPOKE TOO SOON! Back to 9/day...

i absolutely hate prednisone and what it does to me. but in saying that. every time i take it for a flare, it helps.
but with your issues and blood pressure, id definitely ask a dr first before starting it yourself.
good luck. hope u get better quick

Your situation sounds similar to mine. I had a flare start a couple of weeks ago. I tried to fight it with diet and supplements, and I made a lot of progress, but couldn't quite get it tamed. 3 days ago I gave in and started on prednisone. Normally I start on 50-60mg, but this time the doc started me on 20mg after I described the severity of my symptoms. I don't feel like I failed, rather, I saved myself from much of the pred course. My course will be over in 8 more days.

UC Diagnosis May 2003
Survived 9 flares
Used prednisone, asacol 6/day
Alternatives: have successfully tamed 1 flare and counting without prednisone with massive doses of probiotic (along with asacol)
Diet: paleolithic (but I often cheat), non-smoker, non-drinker
Other problems: Childhood asthma

Thanks for the replies.  Oh, I would never start the prednisone without notifying my GI doctor.  As a matter of fact, he is the one who brought the topic up while I was undergoing the sigmoidoscope.  He said maybe I would need a short course of the pred.  We both know that the prednisone plays havoc on my system so that is the reason he has me taking the Cort enemas twice daily.  I am able to hold them in, believe it or not!  Today I only went twice so far and very little bleeding.  If only I could get rid of that annoying pressure in the rectum I would be as good as new.  Think I will try to tough it out at least till the end of the week.

That is great news Christine! I am feeling better too. I thought we could be heading for a downward spiral but looks like things are heading up. I hope you continue to see improvement. I changed my name back to notsosicklygirl tongue
