I'd like to hear about where/when/how people use their enemas.

You have to use them in bed - right? That's what I do so that I can lie on my left side for thirty minutes before flipping over. I have a bedside drawer where I put the recapped bottle until I can dispose of it in the morning.

What about spouses. I don't ever want my spouse to see me. I use it before he comes to bed since he tends to stay up later than me.

The enemas work great for me but I find them (and the garbage) embarrassing.

My husband knows that I use them but doesn't know when and where. He hasn't asked any details and I don't provide.
We've been together 20 years, we're close but there are some things, like this one, that I am very private about, except on the WWW, haha.

Curious that you can be on your back reading after just ten minutes - perhaps a different type of enema than what I use. With Salofalk enema I need to be on my left side for 30 minutes (roughly).

I would prefer to use the enemas in the washroom but walking to bed would defeat the purpose as the enema medicine would not reach high enough.

I don't use enemas but I have the garbage problem with the suppositories I use. I seem to generate so much trash and half of it is suppository wrappers. I know it's nothing compared to an enema box/bottle but I still find myself hiding them inside boxes and other things. I don't want people coming over and seeing that in the trash. Not because I am embarrassed, more because I don't think it is anyones business what medication I put up my behind. I would be in the same position as you if I used enemas, hiding trash and worried someone would walk in while I was inserting it.

i've used enemas in lots of different places even in open plan sleeper trains/buses (no compartments). I wouldn't worry too much it could be lots of things, your husband may not notice...

You have salofalk enemas - the foam right? They're so much easier, faster and neater to administer! I find 5 mins even is enough time on my side. Since they're foam I don't worry about it slipping low afterwards - not like liquid ones. Though I do a kind of headstand (more like a shoulderstand) on the bed afterwards if noone is around. To anyone who happened to see this i'm sure it would just look like an exercise...

haha -yes, i know the shoulder stand pose :)
I should ask about the foam. Mine are the 4g liquid Salofalk enemas.
I'm good and *very* quick at shooting the stuff in there. Takes seconds! haha.

I quit using them in the bed. I use them in the bathroom 30 min prior to bedtime. Have no problem going from BR floor to bed. Cuts out on stress of maybe having to get up and run to bathroom if that urge hits, so I tend to hold it easier.

Well, because of my obesity I cannot reach to do it in bed and only can reach on the toilet.  I have thought about asking my husband of 48 years to help me but just can't!  He knows that problem I have and has not volunteered.  I cannot use the mesalamine enemas and the steroid type don't come in foam - wish it did.  I have used the Protofoam but with no help.  Oh well, we have to deal with this the best way we can - certainly should not be embarrased!

I use mine on the bathroom floor then move immediately to bed and lie on my left side. I usually fall asleep before the 30 minutes is up. My GI said it was ok to do this. I'm not going to lie on the bathroom floor for 30 minutes and I don't want to use it in bed in case a bottle bursts or something...that stuff stains! And, I want to wash my hands after using it.
Status: Remission since late May 2009!
Symptoms began in November 2008, ~4 weeks after giving birth to my son.
Eased for ~3 weeks in December, possibly b/c of probiotic use?
Returned in January 2009 (with a vengeance), diagnosed with pancolitis on January 30.
Currently taking Asacol (400mg 4 pills 3x daily), Rowasa twice weekly, Culturelle probiotic, and Zoloft (25 mg).

I do the steriod enemas laying on the bathroom floor and then move to the bed after a few minutes. I lay on my left side in bed and go to sleep. I usually do them about midnight long after our daughter is in bed asleep and after my husband is asleep. I feel embarrased about them too but they work like magic for me so if I needed help, I'd swallow the embarrassment and he'd help me for sure.

Yesterday I had 7 moles removed and was so embarrased and he totally didn't seem to care. He changed the band aids on my back and helped me clean them. I did all the ones I could reach but he said he would so I didn't have to look at it b/c he knows I get grossed out but that. We've been together since I was 14 and he was 16 years old so we've been through it all together. I do feel silly that I can still get embarrased with him. He's seen it all and done it all. Even bathed me after my c-section.....not pretty!

When I've used them in the past I would never let my husband be in the room with me. I didn't want that picture engraved in his mind. I always felt like enemas zapped my sex drive completely - just knowing I had that to look forward to before the night was over and I didn't want to kill his too. It reminds me of the Seinfeld episode where they talked about how not all nakeds are good, like "coughing naked" and for me personally, naked giving yourself an enema is right up there.
