I have been trying to get rid of this stupid flare for almost a year now. I'm about 90% or so there, but I still have some bleeding and urgency from time to time. I am taking generic Colazal 3x3 a day, benifibre and probiotics. I tried generic Rowasa a month ago and it just made things worse. I used to use Asacol but had to come off due to cost and insurance. Now I can go back to Asacol, and I think I will, but I was wanting to see if using Hydrocortizone enemas might help me out. Sorry about my spelling, not my strong suite. Any input on this would help. Oh, I would be using the generic form of enemas. Thanks

Well, I'd say it's worth it to try it. And that's good you can get back on the Asacol since it seemed to work better for you before.

Don't worry about the spelling...you got close enough we all know what you're talking about and you really didn't misspell that many words! Your grammar and punctuation is good, though, and for me, it's harder to read something when the grammar and punctuation are awful than when the spelling is awful.
Status: Remission since late May 2009!
Symptoms began in November 2008, ~4 weeks after giving birth to my son.
Eased for ~3 weeks in December, possibly b/c of probiotic use?
Returned in January 2009 (with a vengeance), diagnosed with pancolitis on January 30.
Currently taking Asacol (400mg 4 pills 3x daily), Rowasa twice weekly, Culturelle probiotic, and Zoloft (25 mg).

The hydrocortisone enemas, which are what you are talking about, help me tremendously. Rowasa doesn't do much for me.
Proctitis DX 1999, Pancolitis DX 2008
Golimumab study (100mg every 4 weeks)
L-Glutamine 5000 mg + 600 mg pyridoxal alpha-ketoglutarate
Probiotis/VitD3 5000IU+Ca/1000mg DHA

Interested in your report that generic Rowasa made your flare worse. SAME THING happened to me in March-- after using Rowasa successfully off & on for about 14 yrs! Very frustrating situation. You can ask your gastro about the hydrocortizone enemas, but if you're 90% healed he may not want to RX them. Steroids have too much potential for side effects like bone loss, cataracts, etc. Might be that a return to Asacol would solve your problem. Good luck curing the 10% & let us know how you're doing. / Old Hat (30 yrs with left-sided UC ... [etc.])

I can't use Rowasa either, generic or brand name. So when I flare I have to use the steroid enemas. You can do a short burst of them - 3 weeks or so and see if they help. Many people don't have immediate side effects with the steroid enemas because only about 5-8mgs of steroid actually enter the bloodstream. It's always best to try to avoid steroids but sometimes it can't be helped. Do you feel that you are mainly flaring in the rectal area? If so, maybe you can try the steroid suppositories instead.
