What type of drugs are they and are the side effects bad? I'm taking weekly Humira injections and the grumbling/associated symptoms seem to be increasing after only being off prednisone a couple months. This is sort of my last line of hope but I've never tried these drugs and none of my doctors have ever mentioned them. Can these be taken in conjunction with Humira? I'm thinking about asking my doctor for Lialdia and mesalamine enemas, might as well take these since they seem pretty docile in terms of sides, but maybe I can ask about 6mp and sulfasalazine as well?

The CCFA website has the most complete info I've found about UC meds. Here's a link that talks about sulfasalazine. It's a 5ASA like Asacol, Lialda, etc, but is an "older" form that more people have trouble tolerating.

6mp is an immunomodulator that is similar to azathioprine. I posted a link to the CCFA's info about it.

What all meds have you tried? If you're on Humira, I assume you've been through just about everything else?
Status: Remission since late May 2009!
Symptoms began in November 2008, ~4 weeks after giving birth to my son.
Eased for ~3 weeks in December, possibly b/c of probiotic use?
Returned in January 2009 (with a vengeance), diagnosed with pancolitis on January 30.
Currently taking Asacol (400mg 4 pills 3x daily), Rowasa twice weekly, Culturelle probiotic, and Zoloft (25 mg).

To answer your first question, I suggest the Ulcerative Colitis Resources on this forum. There is a section that lists common medications and side effects. Of course, you can also "google" it for more info.

I have been taking sulfasalizine for almost twenty years now. I don't think it is as commonly prescribed these days as other variants (like asacol). When I first began taking it, it made me quite nauseous. But then I switched to the enteric form and had no more problems with it.

I just stopped taking 6mp recently (less than 1 month ago) primarily because I did not consider the side effects a reasonable trade-off for any potential benefit it may have provided. It afflicted me with a range of problems such as headaches, strange bruising, and hair loss. My GP also thinks my current arthritis-like symptoms and myopathy are probably the result of the 6mp (hopefully temporary).

This is not to say that 6mp cannot be of benefit - it has worked well for many on this list. It just wasn't for me. Fortunately, I am doing just fine without it. Hopefully I can wean myself off sulfasalazine as well.
Diagnosed with UC in 1990.
Current Meds: Sulfasalizine (2 g), Rowasa (now and then), Folic Acid (1 mg)
Supplements: fish oil, flax oil, glucosamine, CoQ10, fiber, aloe vera juice, probiotics.
Other: Raw Milk for breakfast. Currently exploring a raw milk fast one day/week.

Sulfasalazine is an older ASA drug. It's not comparable to Humira. ASAs are more for mild to moderate UC and/or maintenance drugs to help you stay in remission.
Diagnosed with ulcerative colitis spring 1999. Have been in remission for years with only a few minor blips.

Maintenance dose sulfasalazine. Probiotics, vitamin D, fiber supplement and fish oil caps. George's aloe vera juice and l-glutamine for gut healing. Mostly grain-free and dairy-free low carb diet.
