I keep seeing where some UC patients take Prevacid or some other type of heartburn meds. Why is that? Also - those who have tried acupuncture, how long did it take to get results & are all practictioners qualified to treat this specifically. We live in a small town where there is only 1 acupuncturist that I am aware of. Don't know if he's qualified to do this &  don't want to waste time & money. Thanks for your input & help!!

I used to never take anything for heartburn/acid reflux until about 4 years ago. I found that for some reason that my stomach just couldn't handle the Uc meds anymore. Maybe it was because I was stupid and didn't take them with food, I dunno.

I can't comment about the accupuncture because I've never tried it for my Uc. I have tried it, however, for weakness in my legs due to back problems. For THAT it worked great! :)

Best thing I use is Apple Cider Vinegar. Tablespoon Raw ACV, tablespoon good quality honey in a cup or so of warm water. I do this right after a meal I know will give me problems. I used to have horrible problems to the point I had to sleep sitting up.

Ran across this a few days ago in relation to your topic:

I have been doing acupuncture since October of 2008 and starting seeing results in March. I had previously taken so much medication that I began to feel toxic so I went with a holistic approach. When I first started the acupuncture I was discouraged, but now am glad that I stuck with it. Results are not immediate like they are with some medication. The only down side is the cost. Good luck.

I have been getting accupuncture for 3 months, & I have been seeing a naturopath (who has me on several suppliments as well) since Jan. The accupuncture seems to help with the bleeding and pain off and on. I've only recently been diagnosed, (Jan 09). I was prescribed Canasa but once I said I wanted to try and heal this naturally the doctor literally closed my folder and walked out of the office...he'd been there long enough to tell me I had Colitis or possibly Crohns. Western Medicine at it's finest!  Anyhow, it's only been 3 months w/accupuncture..I have good weeks and then I have really bad weeks. I am a person who doesn't sit still well...I used to workout out avidly (15+ hrs per week) plus I have a 2 year old and she's a workout in herself.  Now my butt's draggin, I havn't been able to go to the gym for 5 weeks I'm exhausted and considering meds. I have an appt to see a different GI Specialist on July 31st...I'm hoping for a miracle before then.

As far as if the Accupuncturist in your town is qualified, the best you can do is ask him how many patients he's treated with your condition and see what his success rate is.

I'm new to this site & it looks like it's been around for a while..there may be previous posts about it as well if you don't mind digging for them.  Good luck!

My acupuncturist told me that the results from acupuncture treatments would not be effective if I didn't completely give up the western meds for UC. Since I wasn't willing to do that I didn't continue treatment with her.
