Hi -
I have been on 40mg of prednisone for over 2 weeks now.  Normally after 3 days on this high a dose I feel better, but this time I can't seem to get this flare under control.
Has anyone ever kept on flaring while on high doses of steroids?  I am going crazy!!

i am on 60 mg of prednisone and still flaring. i have been on prednisone since january--started at 20 mg and every time my gi had me try tapering, it has gotten me into a worse flare and the dose had to be increased. i've been on 60 mg for 3.5 weeks and it took over 2.5 weeks to stop the heavy bleeding, but the other symptoms are still there. i am really concerned about the prednisone and cant seem to get off it

i was in a severe severe flare for year and 4 months.
and ive been in some that last only 6 months.

this one has been a month now and the real answer to this question is 'who knows' ??

all flares seem to be different in my case and completely unpredictable.
sometimes meds work, sometimes they dont.
sometimes vitamins work and sometimes they dont.

not sure when ill be out of this flare myself, but hopeing that i can taper the pred ok.
im going down to 35 mg tomorrow, from 2 weeks on 40mg.
we shall see.

waiting for blood test to see if i can start imuran
mesalazine granules 3g x1 a day (much nicer than a million tablets a day)
just finished 3 months of prednisolone (worked) and now back on 40mg a day (ick)
quercertin tablets, tumeric capsules, vitamin d3, enteric coated fish oil

I started flaring AGAIN about two and a half weeks ago.  I enjoyed a seven month remission before the symptoms started again. But I must admit, I was on vacation and ate things I know I shouldn't have so I guess I have to pay the piper.
Last year my flare lasted seven months.  Weird that the remission lasted exactly the same time.  My GI doctor did a sigmoidoscope which probably added insult to injury.  I go to him next Tuesday for the biopsy results.  My problem is basically ulcerative proctitis.  It's that ittle bitty part of the anus and just a tad inward but boy is it painful.  Sometimes the pain shoots down into my legs.  Yesterday I just couldn't stand it and had to take a hydrocodone.  I am only going a few times a day and only see a tad of blood but tons of mucus.  It even hurts when I pass gas.
Doc wanted me to start at 20 mgm of prednisone, but that didn't do a thing.  I started at 35 mgm for one week and today tapered down to 30.  He usually starts me at 40 mgm but he knows it plays havoc with my blood pressure. So far the BP has been good.   Started immediately on the Cort enemas night and morning and upped the 6MP to 75 mgm from 50.  Guess if the disease doesn't kill ya the meds will.

Meds as of June 09: Colazal (6 per day), 6MP (50 mgm), Probiotic (upped to 3 per day), Fish oil capsule, calcium, multivitamin, Cort enema nightly, Canasa in morning.  Also taking Benicar and Toprol to control high blood pressure.  Getting old is a b****.

I'm sorry you're not feeling better Christine.
My longest and only flare lasted for well over a year. It began mild and grew to being pretty severe but has been well controlled with 5ASAs so far thankfully. I wouldn't say I am in remission but I am doing much better than I was before the oral medication. My heart really goes out to the people who aren't having luck getting a flare under control. I don't think time means it's more likely to let up. Mine only got worse with time. Without drugs, I would probably be near death from weightloss/anemia and lack of insurance.
Diagnosed with mild proctitis in March 2007: Treated with Canasa (as needed)
December 08: Began treating with Asacol 400mg (9/day) + Canasa 2x/day - Anemic
May 09: Off Canasa, taking Asacol (9/day)
Back on Canasa every other night + Asacol (9/day) + Probiotics + Iron
Reducing to 6 Asacol/day + Canasa + Probiotics + Iron - So far so good!!! -SPOKE TOO SOON! Back to 9/day...
