Hey

Quick background on me. I was diagnosed in 2003 with a mild case of UP. My symptoms were only constipation with blood/mucus and stomach pain. I took Rowasa enemas and it quickly cleared up. Off and on over the years I've had mild flare ups with same symptoms. For the past year I've battled off and on with small amounts of blood, stomach pain, etc. I had my last colonoscopy in 2006 which showed no major changes. I have been taking Rowasa enemas for the past two months and still have some blood once in awhile. My problem for the past month or so is that change in my bowel pattern. I used to always have formed, semi-hard full sized BM's. For the past month or so, they have been thinner (not pencil thin), squishier but still formed and sometimes almost worm like (smaller pieces). I got kind of worried because I know they say if BM's get thinner it could mean a tumor or something like that. I am having a colonoscopy next Monday to check things out, but in the meantime I am worried. I am thinking that maybe it's just that my UP has changed somewhat and maybe I just still have a lot of inflammation in the colon/rectum. I have had bigger (wider) BM's on occasion over the past month, so it's not something that happens everytime although it's most times. If I had a colonoscopy 3 years ago, do I need to be real concerned that it could be something really serious? I have heard that colon cancer is slow growing and I had no signs of that 3 years ago.

Does this happen to anyone else?

Thanks for any input.

I wouldn't be worried at all, it is almost certainly due to your flare. I get exactly the same thing and it is because my colon is inflamed. Maybe your current flare is worse than usual. Its good your getting it checked out just to be safe, especially if your older, but I have had what you describe on and off for a couple years and I definitely don't have colon cancer.

Hi lorigirl....are you on nightly Rowasa?

What changes have you made regarding food intake?

You might want to consider to take fibre supplements to bulk/fluff (only way I can describe it) your stools....

Any emotional distresses as of late other than worrying about cancer?

There should always be "some" concern rather than assuming it's nothing...but the fact that you're having a c-scope soon is a good thing.

I don't know when you were diagnosed, but with experience (unfortunately) comes recognising all the changes or symptoms of coming into a flare, being in a flare and going out of a flare....symptoms definitely vary.

Any other meds such as antihistamines you're taking?

Quincy,

I am not under any stress and haven't changed my diet. I have been taking Rowasa nightly for about a month or so. I was sporatic for awhile and it obviously wasn't helping. Thanks for your response.

You could consider to take fibre supplements and probiotics.

IBS can definitely be a part in what you're experiencing, minus the blood.

Let us know how your c-scope goes...are you planning to be in a twilight alertness to watch the monitor?
Kind of cool to see what's going on....

I had the same thing, my doc told me that the swollen tissue causes the stool to come out that way.

yeah, i get the thin bms too. Probably from the inflamation in the rectum. Don't worry at all. I promise everything is fine.

Yes, I get thin stools sometimes too, usually when I am having a flare up of the IBS or IBD. I think the right amount of fiber drink helps. My doctor recommended 1 tbsp of benefiber. Good luck and chances are it is not cancer. Try not to worry.

Ditto...small stools when flaring.  Then the mucus appears and I know I am in for it.
