It's weird 'cause I've never refused to take any meds and although I hated prednisone, I always wanted to take it just to get back to normal.

But, this time, I don't want to. I dropped all the pounds I gained (because of the flare, yes, but still...) and I don't want to gain it back again. Besides, I think I have pred to thank for the fact that my joints hurt like an old woman's with arthritis. Pred is the pretty poison...

As far as I can tell, I'm doing fine without it. Doing all my meds except for humira and the nausea medication...eating carefully...still have diarrhea, but I only go about once a day...I think this is about the best I can hope for...

I'm wondering: has anyone gotten out of a flare just on their own? Without prednisone?

Diagnosed 2002(?)
Currently on: alternating doses of 6mp, 8 Asacol, weekly Humira, & 1000mg Canasa nightly
Also: generic Immodium and Levbid

Refusing to take pred and humira...(doing a diet/food diary change)

First I applaud your effort. It's harder, but it can be done. Some people are either not able to take it or it doesn't work for them and are forced to find other ways. I am just sick of dealing with the side-effects.

Once a day is GREAT. I wish i had that problem. If I were you as long as I was going once a day and not getting dehydrated, I would hold off on the pred. For me the probiotics make a big difference. I've yet to try a probiotic that didn't help in some way. I've only had one flare that I avoided prednisone completely, but even when I'm forced to use it, if i've been careful with diet and probiotics, I can get away with a smaller dose.

Best of luck.

I've never been able to get away without using Prednisone to end a flare... I dont mean to be pessimistic, and I did try, but in the end I broke down and took the gd steroids.

My hat is off to you, and if you can pull it off without steroids, more power to you.

The last flare I had was from 12/07-5/08, which I refused to take Pred during and ended up taking int the end. Ince I got back on track I started Remicade and have had fantastic results.

Just saying, if you cave, there are other options.

Thanks for the encouragement (and like your nickname, Junkie :] ). Trust me, I know there are other options. I've been through them. Remi stopped working for me about a year ago and Humira really never did anything but made me immune to sticking myself (something no human being should have to do on a regular basis, I feel). My doc said that, other than methotrexorate (sic?), I've only got surgery to go on. And since I've been diagnosed as Chron's (possibly) from my last colonoscopy that certainly won't help me.

My gastro, who subspecializes in IBD treatment, now tries to keep all patients off Pred & other steroids if at all possible. If Crohn's is really your diagnosis, though, you might still be advised to try other med combos than what you've taken in the past. Some gastros think that Crohn's is more bacteria-driven than UC. / Old Hat (30 yrs with left-sided UC ... [etc.])

Yeah I quit taking Asacol and then Colazal they were keeping me in a flare apparently!, as soon as I quit Colazal and switched to a low dosage of Sulfasalazine, my bleeding stopped with in a day or two. I was also on herbals for inflammation some Boswellia and tumeric, probiotic and watch diet carefully. The natural way takes months to help sometimes, diet is very important I believe.

Hey I've been looking into taking some boswellia...is there any place you buy it from or do you have to get it online?

I was on it about 8 months last flair, longer because I started a new job/etc and couldn't get immediate access to humira. Ive been off prednisone for about 3 months but the other day I took 10mg and then 5mg the next day, which was enough to calm down my system. I won't take anymore than that though. I'll be having surgery when the weekly humira fails me. Can't go on prednisone that long again. Ive realized I'm actually using the restroom 5-7 times a day now, while taking weekly humira, and it's really not bad. From what I hear 5-7 may be something like an average for post surgery results, which wouldn't be that bad actually, depending on how well it can be controlled until getting to a bathroom.

I got out of my last flare using diet and probiotics solely. I went from a bloody bout of D, to what I would consider remission(Two BM per day). I clearly conducted an experiment on myself to see if I could get into remission without prednisone or any meds for that matter. As a professional I would not advocate this to other patients. It's what worked for me.
Pharmacist as of 6/12/2009.
Diagnosed 8/99. Suffered for almost 10 years. I am currently on the Specific Carbohydrate Diet and am nearing remission. I feel fantastic! I have lossed so many years to this disease.

MED-FREE!!!

Doc wanted to put me on 6-mp or Remicade, but I refused to take the medications! Currently on the Specific Carbohydrate Diet.  I'm in remission and life is like it always should have been.

I have never taken Pred. It scares me more than the disease. I am hoping that I am coming out of a flare right now, using the Meslamine enemas and asacol. My UC went into remission last spring out of the blue on it's own, and lasted until late summer.
But if I was near hospitalazation maybe I might consider taking Pred, but since so many have trouble getting back off it, that's the only way I will take it.(although unlike some of your GI's, mine keeps trying to push it on me)
Ulcerative proctitis. On Asacol 3 3x a day,  Started Meslamine enemas nightly again.
Doc now has me on prescription Pepcid, and  Questran.  Just started that 05/15, so will wait and see.
Update: Questran made me worse, so I stopped taking it.

Urgency is still my biggest problem.  Blood is now gone.
