So first I went to the ER in February because of a flare up.. I was put on 40mg of Prednisone... I was still having pain and going 6 times a day formed. So I had a colonoscopy done by A NEW GI in I want to say April.. The colonoscopy showed NO history of UC.. (even tho i've had severe and moderate UC show up on my other two colonoscopies. My NEW GI.. thinks it's just IBS and ACTUALLY said he'd have to really be convinced it's UC if I came back telling him I had symptoms... so he doesn't believe I had UC?? Doesn't matter... I don't like him.. he makes me feel stupid when I know I'm not.

Anyways.. I got off the prednisone two weeks ago this Wed. A few days after I was feeling ok.. then it started to get progressively worse.. first it was.. I had to start going urgently.. but it would just be mucous and a lot of stool.... then it went to just diahrea and mucous... then it went to diahreah, blood and mucous.. and the frequency has increased like crazy.. it's 2 pm and I've already gone 6 times.. and I'm talking going constantly for 15 mins each time... I know i'm not finished too.. I've taken 4 of my Hyomax already today.. still going ugh.

I am going to my GI today at 4... and I'm super nervous he's not going to take it as UC symptoms at all.. and I'm super nervous he's going to make me feel stupid or act as though it's IBS.. and just not help me I dunno... I know I have both... but the way that I'm running to the bathroom barely making it on time and only going like.. 1/4 cup diahrea and blood and mucous PLUS TONS OF GAS... its like UC. I also have hemmroids.. and last time my GI said that my blood might be from that, but I really don't think it is. It's mixed in with the stool.. it's not just on the toilet paper or bright red drops..

I just really feel like I'm gonna have to find a new doc if he doesn't help me.

BTW by helping I don't mean PREDNISONE. I refuse to ever again. I hope he'll prescribe rectal meds.. that's what I'm hoping.

Latest-Finally tapering off prednisone 5mg every week.. Staying on Lialda 2 twice a day. Currently colonoscopy shows remission. Apparently my symptoms are from my IBS side of my issues.
Medications:Prednisone 5mg, Lialda 2 twice a day, Align probiotic, Hyomax as needed.

when i requested the anti spasmodic after he said it was IBS... he rolled his eyes at me, but prescribed it anyways. Can ya tell I hate him? haha.. and he's supposedly one of the best GI's in the DFW area UGH!

I'll let you guys know how it went.. btw...does that sound like the beginning of a flare up to you??

Here's what I try to remember when seeing the doctors: I'm paying them to give a service to me. Would you let a waitstaff come up and tell you that you can only order soup on the menu? No, correct? Don't get me wrong, I totally respect all of my doctors, but it's so easy for me to be sidelined or feel a little bit inferior to them. But if I remember that one thing, I feel like it puts us on an equal level. So, just as Quincy stated, request those meds if you'd like to try them. You are in charge of your body!

I thought you've been in a flare all along...not the beginning of a flare to me if you've had consistent symptoms.

Yeah, your doc seems like he has no respect for you.

Sounds like a flare to me too.  Presently, I have the same symptoms.  The worse part is the terrible pressure in the rectum.  I read where Elaine (kops2da) went to see a GI doctor in Albany and he seems to be right on target.  I am not waiting for my doctor to prescribe taking more of the rectal meds, I am going to insist on it.  Some of this crap I am taking doesn't seem to be doing squats.  Colazal ...taking three pills, three times a day...and for WHAT?  The doctor increased the 6MP to 75 mgm...and what the heck is that doing?  Sometimes ya just gotta wonder.
Good luck to you and in the meantime I would hunt around for another GI doctor too if I were you...sounds like he is just too much into himself.

no the prednisone put me into remission... i was pretty good for a few weeks.. once i got off it got worse...

he's SUCH a jerk!!!!! i really hate my dr... going to change after he helps me......

i'm scheduled tomorrow morning for an unsedated flex sig..

first he said that he couldn't just give me rectal meds.. especially because the colonoscopy showed no UC... he said there was no point if it was IBS and that he'd rather look up there to see whats going on first whatever.. he DOESNT believe I have UC... even with my history... he said if i had never seen your history i'd never think from what i've seen that you have UC

IM LIKE UGH GRR AND MORE UGH!!!!!!!!!!

SO then as i'm getting the fleet enema as i'm leaving he walks up with a sample box of Rowasa and says "my little compromise" ***!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

He doesn't listen he TALKS OVER me and I really don't like him!

Yeah be assertive and find a new doctor. I couldn't put up with that. At my last appointment with my ped. GI doctor, he kind of cut me off and cleared his throat when I was talking. THAT pissed me off. Ugh. Good luck.

Hey I went through a couple of GI's too. You've got to be comfortable and happy. Maybe his reputation for being the best has given him too big of a head; sometimes the GI's who maybe don't have the stature that he does are the better doctors (IMO) because they listen to the patient and don't think they "know it all." Good luck SweetMelody; let us know how the sig goes tomorrow.

Are you unable to get your old GI to send over his information? I move a LOT and I usually do that for background information. Maybe he'll take you more seriously with more information about your past experiences. I'd find a new doctor, personally. Best of luck!

oh my,  I just went through an almost identical experience with a doctor in the DFW area as well.  My last colonoscopy prior to seeing him was three weeks before my appointment.  Pathology showed moderate colitis, much swelling, bleeding and some evidence of diverticular disease.  This guy did his own colonoscopy and says the entire colon is healthy and fine.  He did a grand total of two biopsies and said all clear and it was just "a touch" of IBS.  Basically told me to take over the counter meds and suck it up.  I was sent to him because I had been hospitalized with a flare and the diverticular disease was complicating issues and my colon was so swollen that my regular GI couldn't get a scope up there so he wanted someone with more experience to take a look.  HAH!  Anyway, I am back with my regular GI who basically says that he is sorry for the experience and that he wasted my time and his.

I would say it is defintaly UC. I could be wrong but IBS generly does not get mucus. This is caused by inflamation in the colon.

Same thing happened to me -- it's horrible isn't it? They thought I was imagining my symptoms since my husband at the time had UC too; they even brought in other doctors because they were amazed. Yep, I wasn't kidding either! And geez was it ever painful! Sorry you had to go through that.

Ugh, I hate when doctors treat people like they don't know what is happening in their own bodies. Because I was diagnosed when pregnant (even though I had severe symptoms for a full year prior to even getting pregnant), I had to go to 3 doctors before someone would stop saying "yeah, you're sick because you're pregnant" and even do a flex. sig.
26 year old female
Diagnosed with unspecified UC 11/08 by flex. sig. as I was pregnant at the time and did not want to be put under for a colonoscopy
Breastfeeding my baby boy (born 4/8/09)

Started Remicade 6/11/09
Was on Asacol (2400mg or 3600mg a day) for 6 months with no success

Tell me again why you can't use the 5ASA enemas or suppositories? What about the hydrocortisone enemas or suppositories?

Actually.....IBS can produce tons of mucus.....(before IBS was coined a clinical term, it used to be called mucus colitis).   Since the colon produces mucus naturally, over activity will also increase its production.  It's mechanical, not autoimmune.
