I tried and tried to avoid it, but my sinuses got the better of me, and I had to get antibiotics for them.  I just wasn't on top of things enough, I guess.  So I am on a week long course of biaxin (I am allergic to pen. and sulpha).  I started yesterday morning, and started taking a probiotic Wednesday evening (digestive advantage-it is what I had on hand, aside from Align, but I don't tolerate Align well). The guy at the pharmacy said to take the probiotic and the antibiotic at different times to help effectiveness.

Even so, for the first time in a few months, I saw some streaks of blood on my stool this morning.  Before this ends up in an actual flare, I am wondering what else I should be doing while an these antibiotics to keep the gut working smoothly?

On the upside, my sinuses are already starting to feel better, but I am nervous about this sending me back into a flare.

Thanks for any input...

Well, maybe take double the dose of probiotics...that's really the only thing I can think of.
I'll keep my fingers crossed for you!

Thank you! I am taking two capsules rather than one of the probiotic, and I am not seeing any urgency or having d, so I am definitely not in panic mode about it at this point.

I was thinking maybe I should also eat more yogurt, but who knows. I hate antibiotics.

Hopefully the streaks of blood will be as bad as it gets, and I will count myself as lucky if that is the case!

Also, what about rectal meds? I see that canasa gave you joint pain, but do you think Rowasa would do the same? Or maybe a steroid enema suppository? It might help keep inflammation from getting out of hand.

You know, I was thinking about that too. Honestly, as long as it works and it is temporary, I can deal with the joint pain from the Canasa, and I do still have some. I would really prefer not to have a steroid enema if I can avoid it (I can't sleep at all whenever I use them), but I could talk to the GI about Rowasa too. Thank you for mentioning that!!

Now, do you think I should go ahead and use the rectals as a preventitive measure, or wait and see how things go in the next few days?

The joint pain built as I stayed on the Canasa, so maybe I could avoid the worst of that if I only had to use it for a couple of weeks or something.

Thank you for your reponses on this. I know I am fortunate to have been feeling so good overall, and I really hope I can keep it that way.

I'd use them as a preventative. I am still pretty new to UC and am still figuring out how I want to do things now that I'm in remission. I'm currently using Rowasa twice weekly (Thurs and Sun nights) and I kind of think I'll keep on that track. It's not that much of a PITB to do, so why not do it?

Biaxin was the antibiotic that triggered my UC. If I have to have a course of antibiotics, I ask the doc to prescribe one that's least likely to cause intestinal issues. This has been discussed on here in the past with many folks mentioning Z packs as a good alternative. If you feel the biaxin is causing problems, call your doc and ask for a different prescription.

That said, yes, do increase probiotic intake and take probiotics away from your antibiotic dose.

Also, investigate the neti pot for sinus woes. It could keep you from having to go the antibiotic route next time around.
Diagnosed with ulcerative colitis spring 1999. Have been in remission for years with only a few minor blips. Scope on 6/22 showed no inflammation at all.

Maintenance dose sulfasalazine. Probiotics, vitamin D, fiber supplement and fish oil caps. George's aloe vera juice and l-glutamine for gut healing. Mostly grain-free and dairy-free low carb diet.

Thank you, Princesa! I actually usually take the z pack for my sinuses, but my GP said that there have been studies in our local area that are finding resistance to z packs (in my area, not in other areas) for sinuses (LOTS of people have sinus issues around here, it seems), so they are not prescribing it as much as they used to. Thus the biaxin.

So far, I am faring ok. Still going just once a day, and I didn't see blood today. Hopefully I will make it through this fairly unscathed. I haven't been on biaxin since pre children (my second child and a long round of erythromycin are what triggered my disease), so I hope I tolerate it well. I have the canasa at the ready, but haven't started using it. I might tonight, just to have another safeguard in place.

I actually do have a nasal syringe-same idea as the neti pot, just a little easier to use, IMO, and I use it all through the winter and spring months in combination with grapefruit seed extract nasal spray, but it just wasn't enough. Sinus infections are something that have plagued me for years-to the point that I wonder if I should see an ENT about it. Also, since living in my current house, all of my health problems have been elevated, even before the UC came to pass. I think we should at least have our air ducts cleaned and see if that makes a difference.
