I am on Canasa 1/day currently, and want to have a baby in the near future.
Is there any research about the efect of 5-ASA on male sperm?

Or I'd better take off Canasa for at least 3 months?
I asked my GI, he did not give me a clear answer but saying: "Hmmmmm, It should be OK. You know, most of research about pregnancy is related with women who are taking 5ASA."

I am also thinking to swtich another GI and confirm this. My wife and I are kind of worry about this.  I appreciate any suggestions.

I am not a doctor but I don't think Canasa is a big deal during pregnancy. It is pretty much the least likely to cause problems. I even think oral 5ASAs are usually seen as acceptable for use during pregnancy and the rectal suppositories are only topical as far as I know. I would consult an obgyn and look for answers here. You should find some info in a search or there is a sticky at the top with resources that may be helpful. I hope you have a stress free pregnancy!
Diagnosed with mild proctitis in March 2007: Treated with Canasa (as needed)
December 08: Began treating with Asacol 400mg (9/day) + Canasa 2x/day - Anemic
May 09: Off Canasa, taking Asacol (9/day)
Back on Canasa every other night + Asacol (9/day) + Probiotics + Iron
Reducing to 6 Asacol/day + Canasa + Probiotics + Iron - So far so good!!! -SPOKE TOO SOON! Back to 9/day...

As far as I know, 5-ASA are not contraindicated in pregnancy.
Pharmacist as of 6/12/2009.
Diagnosed 8/99. Suffered for almost 10 years. I am currently on the Specific Carbohydrate Diet and am nearing remission. I feel fantastic! I have lossed so many years to this disease.

MED-FREE!!!

Doc wanted to put me on 6-mp or Remicade, but I refused to take the medications! Currently on the Specific Carbohydrate Diet.  I'm in remission and life is like it always should have been.

The problem for men would be if they are teratogenic, and to my knowledge, 5ASAs are not.
Status: Remission since late May 2009!
Symptoms began in November 2008, ~4 weeks after giving birth to my son.
Diagnosed with pancolitis on 1/30/09
Currently taking Asacol (400mg 4 pills 3x daily), Rowasa twice weekly, Natural Factors Ultimate probiotic 12/12 Formula, and Zoloft (25 mg).

when i started canasa i asked my GI if this was safe during pregnancy as we are also planning a family.... my GI said " very safe - go ahead, dnt even bother". so if it is o.k for a woman (me!) it should be definitely ok for you.

Research and years of observation have shown no decrease in fertility or negative effect on the sperm as a result of mesalamine. You should be good to go.

Good luck!
