I don't know if any of you noticed I was missing but I've been in Florida for the past 10 days for vacation.  Boy was it HOT there!  I don't know how you Floridians can take that heat! LOL  But the first day I was there, I noticed I was bleeding again.  Nothing major so it could've been from my hemmies too.  But then the D started.  It wasn't bad, just unpredictable.  I never knew when the urge was going to hit.  It struck twice while I was at Universal Studios, once while at Busch Gardens and a couple times when we went out to eat.  My left side hurt a little but it was mild.  Oh and when I went swimming, I felt a horrible pulling sensation on my left side.  I think I'm starting a mild flare.

No Heather, I am not going to try the rectal meds just yet - I can only do steroid enemas and I have such a bad reaction to steroids that it is almost not worth it. turn   But I will keep an eye on things to see if it gets worse and IF it does then I will have to start them eyes

But anyway, this was sort of a rant/update post.

So sorry your vacation got marred by UC, Sherry. I hope you enjoyed the vacation despite that, and also that your symptoms subside soon.

So sorry about your vacation.  I agree about the heat in Florida.  Since I live in upstate NY we only go to Florida in winter!!

As for the rectal meds - you know that is all I am on and I found out one thing for me!  I have used Canasa suppositories, Protofoam, hydrocodone enemas and Rowasa.  I know that I had problems with them all for various reasons - itching, problems keeping in, etc.  WELL, my new doc from Albany ask me which one was the best.  He does not want me on steroids or 6 MP so I told him Protofoam.  He prescribed Cortifoam which is like that only stronger followed by an Anusol suppository.  I want to tell you - the easiest by far to do in the last year of trying about everything.  I have not gotten up to using it 3 times a day which I really want to as he prescribed but twice a day is really helping. AND - no cramping, stays in there and actually feels good.  Just wanted to share.

Still have little steaks of blood and mucous but on perfectly formed stool only about twice in the morning so far.

LOL Sherry. Could have been the extreme heat/humidity in Florida that exacerbated things for you. Hope your vacation wasn't totally ruined.

How about asking the doc for Anusol HC....they're steroid, lower dosage than the cortifoam?

Do try fibre supplements maybe and up your probiotics.

Sucks Sherry that this is still happening, but hope that now you're home, you improve.

Did Bentyl help with some urges?

Yep, noticed you weren't on often, but it's early summer and holiday season...

Yes, I did have a lot of fun and my Uc just put a slight damper on things.

I took the Bentyl every day while I was there (I don't do that at home) and yes it helped a bit with the cramping but not the urges. One time when we were in a restaurant the urge hit so hard that I almost didn't make it to the bathroom. But I'm hoping now that I am home that it will settle down. I am still car lagged and still have that ooey gooey feeling in my gut but not as bad. If it continues then maybe I will ask about the Cortifoam or even the suppositories. Usually when I start a steroid, even the smallest dose possible in any form, I get super jittery, insomnia, thigh cramps, headaches and slight facial rash. But, like the cortisteroid injections I get in my neck, I will handle the side effects to feel better :(

Hi Sherry.

So sorry but hopefully it's the hemmies and some IBS...if it's not try cortifoam it's wonderful and very easy to use. Feel better soon : )

Sorry to hear that you had symptoms on vacation.  I hate the unpredictability with this disease.  It makes it so hard to enjoy life sometimes.  I'll have several days where I'm doing pretty good and then I'll have a bad day with lots of urgency.  The problem is that I never know from day to day how I'm going to be.  It sure makes it hard to go on about my life when I never know if "today is the day".

I agree about the heat!  We had that really hot weather here last week (it might've been while you were gone).  It was miserable!

This UC needs to be kicked real hard....it jumps in at wrong time! But seems you didnt allow it to trouble you enough to spoil your vacation.... that's what i still need to learn to do - the moment i get a flare up, i think about it the whole day :-(
UC forum : Dx Jan'2009: Canasa suppositories 1000 nightly - worked for 2 months then re-flare
13 may: canasa 1000 X2 daily for 2 weeks; 30May: LialdaX2 started on 30th may.
Symptoms: Mucus, blood, constipated (not always), Lots Gas
Also started Probiotic from 23 Mar & fresh Turmeric root from 25 March'09- stopped both on 10th May
Thyroid Forum: Dx in Dec'08, levothyroxine from 50mcg to 77 mcg in June'09 :-(

I heard about the heat here :) In fact, I told my best friend that I mailed it to y'all from Florida!

Yes, Uc is so darn unpredictable! But no, I didn't let it bother me too much. It was a minor nuisance more then anything else.

Yes, indeed, we missed you! (And DakotaGirl, too, where is she hiding?) I'm not surprised to read that UC bothered you in a hot, humid place-- because that generally riles my gut when traveling. Also, it can be the in-out from heat to A/C, especially in places where they don't clean the filters often. But I recently revved up my symptoms at home-- cleaning!!!! Grrrrrrrr. I used some cleaning solutions w/o wearing gloves-- likely a big mistake. That cheminal stuff must absorb thru my skin & bother my holy colon. It's a drag to try making your home neater & get D as a result--- rats! Anyway, a big welcome back to you!!!!!!!!!! / Old Hat (30 yrs with left-sided UC ... [etc.])

Just curious, why would hot weather bother Uc? It doesn't make sense to me considering how hot our bodies are to begin with. But yes, we were in and out of the heat and into AC almost constantly. Back here at home, it has been cool and cloudy (I guess I missed summer! LOL) and today my Uc isn't bothering me that much. But I did have to take a Bentyl this morning to help with cramping.

And thanks Old Hat :) Btw, Dakotagirl has been busy with life and work at the moment and she pops on when she can.

Ugh! Isn't that typical? You go away for some relaxation and UC has to be a booger. I hope you had a little fun :)
I was actually just noticing how heat aggrivates my stomach. The movie theater I work at cools everyone in the place but the employees and I noticed how icky my stomach was. Sometimes I think it bugs me because I'm incredibly uncomfortable when I'm even a little hot and it stresses my body out. I'm actually going to be in Florida for vacation Saturday and now I'm kind of worried about the heat lol
Glad to hear you're feeling a little better today. Hopefully it was just the heat and things will calm down for you!

Sherry,
I'm so sorry that you ddin't get to enjoy your trip as much as you would have liked. I'm so bummed that you were here and we didn't get to meet up. Next time you are in Orlando we will have to get together. Yes, the heat has been pretty miserable the past couple of weeks even the people who have lived here all there lives said that it was worse then they ever remembered, we actually did break a couple records for the high temps. I works nights and I leave around 6:30 - 7:00 am and it was already in the 80's F and now we are having a cooling off period with lots of rain. At least you weren't here to get soaked and deal with all the thunder storms. A house just a couple miles from mine was hit by lightning and the 7000 square foot house was a total loss.

I hope you start feeling better soon!

Emily, I didn't know you were in Orlando! Darn! We stayed in a hotel off International and Carrier (across from Wet n' Wild). I was watching the morning news while I was there and they were saying how they are unseasonably hot. Just my luck! LOL But it did rain on us while we were there. But it was so odd (at least to me it was) that it would rain and then bam, here comes the sun or it would rain and still be sunny. We normally don't have that in MI. It usually stays gray and cloudy here while it rains.

Sam, I will keep my fingers crossed for you that the heat doesn't bother you. As Emily wrote, you can see that they are cooling off so maybe by the time you get there, the temps will be a bit milder.
