Hello all, its been a while since i've posted.
Most of us UC sufferers have been experiencing joint pain and i have been in the boat for about 3 years now.
Starting with just back pain, its moved to my knee ribs etc. Which i have been told that is common in a condition called anklosing spondyitis, which im told i have :(
However recently i've been having hip pain for 3weeks now and finding it hard to move around, sleep etc does anyone know if this is common with this condition? or could be something else? Im really worried after reading a post on "not to take prednisolone" and the effects it has of causing avascular nercrosis. I dont know if there is reason to worry, but does anyone know more about this conditon, and how it can be diagnosed for sure.

Diagnosed in 2001,
Since then i have flared seven times,
Currently on Asacol 6 tabs a day. Recently diagnosed with osteopenia.

If you have a history of prednisone use it's probably best to get yourself referred to a rhuematologist for an accurate diagnosis. It could be AVN or it could be arthritis. But with a history of UC and a possible history of prednisone use, it's best to get an evaluation.

dx proctitis in 1987
dx UC in 1991, was stable until 1998

1998 started prednisone, asacol, pentasa, nortriptylene, ativan, 6MP, rowasa enemas and suppositories, hydrocortisone enemas, tried the SCD diet, being a vegetarian, omega 3s, flax, pranic healing, yoga, acupuncture, probiotics

2000 lost all my B-12 stores and became anemic

2001 opted for j-pouch surgery- now living life med-free

AVN from steroids most commonly appears in the hip, knee or shoulder. Having had it, I can tell you mine was a very severe, deep gnawing pain. It got so intense at the end that I had days where I couldn't even carry a thought through to the end or complete a coherent sentence. For perspective, I'm the woman who walked around for two months with both of the bones in my lower left leg broken. The pain from AVN was much worse than that, much worse than any post-operative pain I've ever had.

Your best bet is to see a good orthopedist or rheumatologist. They will most likely want to do an MRI to see what is going on.

Hope you feel better soon.
