:-)  Hi all,I havent been here in a long time but I feel I was brought here by fate .Ive had uc since I was 14 now 37 and let me tell ya I have been through hell with this uc from 14 to age 20 Im sure anyone with uc knows the battle.Age 19 was my worst flare up ever where I almost died,I was 119pounds and 5'8 and my sking was pale as a ghost.Once I got better from being at nyc hospital and took predisone for a short time but stayed on the asulfazine about 12 pills a day and also took folic acid also while I changed my diet to a more healthy one cause I had no choice in the matter things got better many years with very small flare ups here and there.I stayed away from fast food, soda, dairy, chocolate candies, candy, junk food, fried food, liquor, smoking and trying not to be stressed out so I would try to think positive.I ate boiled cabbage, broccoli, green squash, quaker old fashoned oatmeal, warm cream of buckwheat cearel, boiled eggs and I drank apple juice and water.I also went to the health food store to find more healthy food and snacks.I also stayed away from sugar and enriched flour white bread.I ate whole grain bread or wheatless bread.I had soymilk and soy ice cream dairy-free.I did this from the fall of 1991 at age 20 to 1999 with a flare up in 1996 very mild and fixed fast and another flare up at 1998 but was cleared up quick.I then saw the juiceman jay kordich on tv speaking about making fresh vegetable juices with a juice machine and I bought it fast and he said dont cook the vegetables instead drink them especially cabbage and the green veggies like cabbage, broccoli, green squash, spinach, celery and mix carrots etc.I started doing the cabbage the most and my stomach was feeling better and better.I juiced all these veggies and my bowel movement were better then ever.I was still on the asulfazine reduced over the years to 6 a day and a folic acid pill. When I went for my like always colonoscopy since I was 14 and taking my pillss since 14 the doctor said he is going to lower my pills to 4 a day then as time went on after a year of doing this juicing my doctor said what ever your doing keep it up and he took me off the meds completely. It was 2002 and no more pills.I have been doing great ever since. It worked for me,it might not work for everyone but it worked for me.Now I still juice my vegetables but its better to juice them then to eat them cooked cause alot of the cooked takes away much of the life of the veggie.Eating them raw is great to but I would rather drink them and have it soothe my colon and do well for me.I hope this true story helps at least 1 or more persons. :-)

I tried juicing cabbage and baby spinach, things didn't go very well for me. I don't know if it is because i'm currently flaring or what? I figured since I wasn't digesting the fiber it would be good for me. But I had a very adverse reaction, my stool color changed to green for the entire day. Anyone else experience this?

Jakula, great to hear that juicing worked well for you.

Juicing veggies has helped me a lot too. I was juicing a bag of spinach and a handful of carrots everyday for breakfast. It's a great energy boost and excellent source of nutrition. Also, I was putting the juice through a sieve before drinking so that I was only taking in juice and no residue.

Apetro, stool color turning green if you're eating or drinking a lot of green veg isn't necessarily a bad thing, and is probably expected.

Your story will help me. Ive found the same thing. Im now on a raw food diet and I am in remmission. 1-2 BMs a day. Im not fully healed but like some people are but I hope to be. ive just made it thourgh a period with no blood or mucus. That is something. I will keep everyone up dated. I find carrot juice the best to reduce blood.

Frankly I'd rather have surgery than eat raw foods my whole life.

I too changed my diet to a lot of fresh fruit and veggies, cut out junk food since my first flare and have been doing very well. I think that is what we should be eating, there are so many vitamins and minerals we miss out on with a processed food diet.

I hope this diet keeps you healthy.

Dx:  UC Proctitis 2006
Meds:  None so far. Garlic works to ease flares. My GI laughed when I told him and said it was just coincidence.
Started Meds:  Apr 9 08 500mg 5ASA (salofalk) to ease flare, tapering, stopped.
Diet:  Regular fresh garlic, Biobest yogurt daily, Omega 3 supplements, very limited junk food, carbs and processed food, low fat diet.  Lots of fresh fruit and veggies (limited potatoes).
 Added: tumeric and probiotics.

qazwsx12,

If you get on a raw food diet, you don't need to stay on it your whole life. I think that goes for most of the diets that many of us are trying. Once you get into remission, you can start adding in other foods gradually.

But I can relate to what you're getting at, as the raw food diet seems like one of the toughest diets to stay on.

Jakula, do you have any tips like when you juice or if you drink the juice with meals. What other foods do you eat? I saw a nutritional councilor once and she told me the majority of each meal should be vegetables but I just wasn't able to do it. Maybe juicing would be a good thing for me since i notice what I eat really affects my UC. I am med free and almost in remission and I just need a little more help.

I would like a bit more info as well. Perhaps a book recommendation and a juicer recommendation and some techniques that work well with flare ups.
Diagnosed in November of 2006 with UC (ileitis) though I had symptoms ,which were misdiagnosed as IBS and hemorrhoids, nearly 6 months before I finally went to a GI. Also have a bad arthritic right leg that hurts in my hip joint....at least I think it is arthritis though it could be directly tied to IBD.
Colonoscopy in November of 2006 and took part in a Prednisone and Asacol taper program.
No serious flare ups just moderate ones for nearly 3 years. It was nice....
May 2009 experienced first serious flare up and now on prednisone 30mg daily and waiting for my next colonoscopy....yay.

Im afraid that you do need to be on a raw food diet. for the rest of your life. If you dont then the desiese will come back. As these are the foods that cause the deseiase in the first place. Im trying to be vegan but I do occasionly eat lock salmon. It is hard but at the moment I cant even use my asacol at night only occasionaly. Its because my body just doesnt need it. At the moment my colon is happy. Im just trying to get the rest of me to cathch up.

for some reason when I was not on raw foods i had a feeling I would get cancer, but at the moment that feeling is gone. I strongly suggest tring this diet. and buy Paul Nisons book. Its all about jucing and raw foods. For most apperantly not for all this will work. Lets see what happens to me?

To all Im not saying I am a vegan, all Im saying is right now Im in remission and feeling the best ever.I dont eat my veggies,I drink them its much faster and the goodness of the juice gos right into my bloodstream in minutes and it soothes my stomach and colon.I now eat a regular dinner like spagetti and turkeyballs with sauce, meatloaf and mash potatoes.I sometimes have fast food once in a while.I also drink soymilk with my cearel and cookies and cake.but I do all this in moderation,I got to know when to stop eating to much of the tasty stuff.I juice in the morning or afternoon like a 24 to a 32 ounce glassof cabbage juice with spinach etc. When I eat some junk food,if my stomach is bothering me a little I get a bunch of spinach and some green squash or broccoli drink it down and I feel secure. The juiceman jay kordich says you can drink your juice while you eat if you like.great to here many of you are interested in this veggie juicing. If I had a flare up this is what I would do I would get a head of cabbage juice it and drink it,then a few hours later I would get 1 or 2 or 3 bunches of spinach and mix it with about 4 or 5 green squash and gulp it down. They say big gulps helps you drink it faster then sitting there drinking sip by sip tasting every green taste cause it can taste pretty yuki drinking it slow. Its also good to mix carrots into your juice to better the taste even apples.books Fresh Vegetables and Fruit Juices
by Dr. Norman W. Walker. The juice machine I have been using for 2 years now is the BREVILLE JUICE FOUNTAIN,I bought it in macys for 140.00 marked down from 199.00.Its the best one Ive ever had.good luck to ya feel free to ask more questions,Ive been through alot med free

Ditto. How incredibly unsociable that would be!

And, in my view, not eating (or not trying to at least pretend to eat) what you are served at a business function can leave the very bad impression that you are picky (childish) or high maintenance. I'm not saying it is true about you, but it leaves that impression. (And please don't even of think of suggesting you reveal your pooping disease). Not good. Not hired.
49 year old female attorney, diagnosed UC/pancolitis 1985, no surgery but much suffering. Asacol maintenance for 20+ years; used prednisone & Rowasa for flares.  Probiotics (Ultimate Flora, 50 billion), salmon oil (omega-3) when I can remember.
August 2008 sought care of naturopathic doctor. Food sensitivity test showed wheat/gluten, other intolerances; eliminated wheat/gluten from my diet.
Bad flare in March, used prednisone. Humira denied, started Remicade 4/12 and doing great~ learning what normal is~ wow

I totally agree Peety, Qazwsx..... to me, I'd take an ileo or jpouch ANY DAY over eating raw foods the rest of my life. Or being on SCD the rest of my life. Or the Makers Diet. Or any restricted diet! Now that's infringing on your lifestyle....

JAKULA, I have a couple questions for you hopefully you reply......
I've been juicing vegetables close to a year now, but I have been religiously doing it for the past two months and I have noticed a difference. I only juice broccoli, spinach, carrots, and usually an apple. I tried the cabbage but I actually puked it up. Never ate cabbage before cooked or anything, but it taste so strong almost like a strong zesty pepper taste when you juice it.

The tast over powered everything I put in that drink. I figured it would taste like lettuce, yeah right...... Are you basically just used to the taste? Or do you water it down with something?
26 year old male, diagnosed back in 2000 with UC.
My maintenance drugs consist of fish oil and acidophilus.. I take prednisdone when I have a flare up to get it under control. My bum likes me at the moment.

Started juicing vegetables and have actually noticed a difference.
