Hi

On Monday I had a colonoscopy and was given propofol, fentanyl and versed.  I was out - it was totally comfortable and I woke up no problems.  I had the usual gas pains but nothing else.

While going home and until today I have had terrible/excrutiating abdominal pain with nausea, vomiting the works.  This has never happened to me after the procedure.  My GI had me go for catscan.  It was clear.

I was wondering if it could be a negative reaction to propofol, this is the only drug I have never had before during the procedure.  I know and have read that it is very short acting.  Just curious to see if anyone else has ever had similiar reaction.

Thank you,
Stacy

I just had a colonscopy yesterday and they used propofol on me ... and was fine right after as well. Today I have had nausea and feel like somone is squeezing my insides...I have not vomited. I am also extremely achy. I think it is the propofol. I hope tomorrow is better!

Stacy,
Were you flaring when you had the c-scope done? I had my most recent c-scope 3 weeks ago and was in a severe flare. I was given the same drug cocktail as you. I had the gas pains and cramping the rest of the day but the next day and for a few days after I had severe cramping/pain/nausea. I'm not sure if it was from the c-scope or the flare but it was miserable. I was worried about post scope complications but just rode it out like it was any other UC week. I was eventually better. I then started a new medication and progressively got better.

I think it could have been due to your flare (if you were flaring at the time), or just a normal reaction to the procedure itself, not the drugs. Hopefully you'll feel better soon.

Present Meds: Switching to Lialda 4 pills 1x daily and Canasa Suppositories (hopefully this combo will work, if not back on the Pred-unless I want to try Humira or Cimzia)

Past Meds: 40 mg Prednisone Daily for 1 year, Miralax Daily, Ginger Supplements, Remicade Aug 2006-June 2009

Hi Ashley - I am not flaring. My colon looks better than it has in 10 years! It took me a few days too to push past pain, etc. I have had several scopes and never had this reaction, that is why I was wondering about meds.

Take care and thanks for the response.

Hmm strange. Well I don't know what to make of that. I've had 7 scopes and the ones during my flares have painful cramps afterward for a few days but scopes when I'm in remission or very mild don't cause the painful cramps just gas.

It could be the meds in your case maybe since you have never had the reaction before and this was your first propofol experience. Who knows?

You take care as well and I hope my two cents helped. At least you know you aren't alone. There's a whole board of people here that support each other.
