I can't seem to go below 7.5mg of prednisone. Can't tell if this is because I need it to keep my UC in check, or because my body has stopping making natural steroids after two years. Supposedly the body makes around 5mg of natural steroids normally. I have tried reducing very gradually, but it hasn't worked.

Does anyone know if there is a test to see if the body adrenal gland is/can still make its own steroids?

Ben, 40

Symptoms diagnosed 4/07.

Currently taking daily 7.5mg Prednisone, 100mg 6MP, calcium w/Vit D, 1/2 Prilosec (protects stomach from prednisone), fosamax (trying to build bones back up from prednisone effects), Retin-A (helps with back acne from prednisone use), probiotic (20 billion), multivitamin.

You're steroid dependent and should talk with your GI about taking another medication to get permanently off prednisone.  The next step would be Remicade.  I'm not sure how long you have been on 6MP but if it's been six months and you still can't reduce your prednisone than the 6MP is not working.  I'm sure I don't need to list the long term side effects of staying on even low doses of steroids.
I had this same problem; I could never get below 10mg without flaring and 6MP did not work for me.  Finally the fear of long term pred use got me to seek an alternative solution.
