Hello again everyone

I am still fighting this flare-up I'm in. I am not having as many loose stools or watery diarhea, but nothing formed yet. Most of the day I am cramped and uncomfortable, but I have asked my doctor if I could hold off on the pred to see if I can beat this on my own first. My biggest problem now is, I am starting to lose weight again. It is a bigger concern than before because I couldn't seem to put the weight back on from my initial flare.
My questions are- how can I gain the weight back when it's so hard to eat the proper amount of calories when you're flaring and when you're not, most high calorie foods are triggers.
What do you guys do to put weight back on. I have thought of going to see a nutritionist.
Also, if I'm not having diahrea, but still some other symptoms, how long before I should sit down with my doctor. I am afraid to go to the next step.

Thanks for your inputs...they help me out a lot. I really need to put some weight back on...that's my #1 priority. (and getting out of this flare of course)

If you are digesting food fairly well, you may want to try something like a whey protein isolate supplement shake. Mix it with some flax oil (for extra calories and anti-inflammatory properties), rice milk, yoghurt, fruit or whatever. If lactose intolerant, you will want to avoid any whey protein supplements that contain casein. This based on the assumption that it is easier to drink calories than to eat them (can also avoid trigger foods).

I personally have been having a difficult time keeping my weight down due to my milk consumption - which is another possible alternative.
Diagnosed with UC in 1990.
Current Meds: Sulfasalizine (2 g) (1 g) (500mg), Rowasa (now and then), Folic Acid (1 mg)
Supplements: fish oil, flax oil, glucosamine, CoQ10, fiber, aloe vera juice, probiotics.
Other: Raw Milk for breakfast. Currently exploring a raw milk fast one day/week.

For me it is impossible to gain weight while I am flaring. I know the more I eat, the more I am stuck using the toilet so I don't eat.
Diagnosed with mild proctitis in March 2007: Treated with Canasa (as needed)
December 08: Began treating with Asacol 400mg (9/day) + Canasa 2x/day - Anemic
May 09: Off Canasa, taking Asacol (9/day)
Back on Canasa every other night + Asacol (9/day) + Probiotics + Iron
Reducing to 6 Asacol/day + Canasa + Probiotics + Iron - So far so good!!! -SPOKE TOO SOON! Back to 9/day...

That's the exact cycle I get stuck in. There's got to be a better way. I have a fast metabolism to begin with, so I can't afford to lose weight every flare since I have trouble putting it back on. I was 170lbs last summer. Last night I weighed 146lbs. I am fading away and I look so scrawny now. That's hard on a guys self esteem. I am fairly athletic and always worked out, so looking at my ribs in the mirror hits home. There must be something I can do without bumping up to hardcore meds just yet.............isn't there? idea
