I have had UC for about three years and am in clinical and endoscopic remission after my last hospital admission with IV steroids and hydration.  I am currently having few symptoms and am on Lialda 2.4 gm daily.  I also have just found out that my hyperthyroidism is under control with my current meds.  So, the health is fairly stable.  I've gained a little weight as well, which is good.
My GI wants to start 6-mp as a maintenence drug.  I took Imuran in the beginning, but it didn't have an effect.  That said, I was in my worst flare and only Remicade worked.  I have since stopped Remi due to the cost and have been ok since that time.  So, they are thinking 6mp might be a better drug to maintain remission.
My thought is that I should add a medication if I'm already doing well on what I'm taking now.  I can always start rectal meds if I flare or up the 5 ASA.  Why add a chemo med if I don't really need it right now?  Any thoughts?

I think that if you're happy with your status and that your UC isn't affecting your quality of life, then just stick with Lialda. What's the maximum daily dose? I'd also probably be on a rectal med for maintenance anyway. I'm using a mesalamine enema twice a week and plan to stick with that, even if I stay in remission.
Status: Remission since late May 2009!
Symptoms began in November 2008, ~4 weeks after giving birth to my son.
Diagnosed with pancolitis on 1/30/09
Currently taking Apriso (4 pills ONCE!! daily), Rowasa twice weekly, Natural Factors Ultimate probiotic 12/12 Formula, and Zoloft (25 mg).
