Hey Mumbles,

I started on 50mg of 6mp on May, 4th and felt fine while on it, no side affects whatsoever.  My blood tests came back perfect so my GI jumped my dosage up to 100mg and thats when the side affects hit me (they hit me hard).  I had sever nausea, fatigue, tiredness, dizinees, etc... the side affects were so bad that I had to take 2 days off of work.  My 2nd month blood tests came back un satisfactory so my doc reduce my doasage back down to 50mg, he might raise them to 75 soon however.

In regards to when you should take them, I would do it right before you go to bed only becasue the main side affect is fatigue and tiredness.

Good luck and make sure you get your blood tests done!

Definately take it before bedtime. Whatever side effects you may have, you will sleep right thru it :)

While taking a shower I realized my answer to Sherry was a little "harsh" or something.  Maybe some can sleep through the side effects - I think I could on 50 mg. but when I went to 75 mg. I could barely get out of bed and it got worse every day.  I tried 10 days max so the doctor could test my blood at that level for tolerance/therapeutic value, etc.  I was soooo sick by the day of the blood test.  I had to drink about a bottle of pepto, take 3 Tylenol, etc. etc. just to get there.  I wish it could have worked for me however!

So, back to my answer - I imagine my mind is going bezerk because of tapering prednisone.  I have felt so great for 6 months - UC gradually getting better the last two after stopping 6 MP and just on rectal meds and prednisone.  I want my prednisone back. (this week is 5 mg. every other day and then finish)  I am hoping I can talk my doctor into letting me go on low doses like 20 mg. - I felt so good then.  I am 69 so unless something happens that I have to go off the steroids, I love it.  My blood count and all blood tests have been perfect (aside from no therapeutic value of the 6 MP).  I have very strong bones and my knees felt so wonderful on prednisone.  I need two knee replacements which I could have taking steroids!

Just my take on everything realizing we are all different!

That is great and I am sure some can. I forgot what it was like to sleep all night anyway. Have had insomnia for years and overactive bladder. Sounds great!

It took a long time for the 6-mp to start working for me.  I'd say it was 6 to 8 months.  But when I started taking it I would have done anything to feel better.  I had been on just asacol for 2 years with flare ups the whole time.  Within 4 or 5 months of the flares doc put me on prednisone.  I had no idea what I was getting into.  It took me 1 year to get off the prednisone, and finding a new doc of course.  I was scared to try the 6-mp, and had my ups and downs with it in the beginning.  At first I was on 75mg (1 and 1/2 tablet), anemia kicking in big time.  Had to have iron iv's and at one point even a blood tranfusion.  It was my hemotologist who finally contacted my gastro doc and said cut her 6-mp way down.  I now take 25 mg(1/2 tablet).  Been in remission ever since.  Anemia finally stabled.  That was almost 5 years ago, and only minor flare ups were twice.  Doc also prescribed hydrocortisone enema which I use only when it acts up.  Still taking the asacol too, 6 tablets daily.  I am still so amazed that different things work differently for everyone.  One of the mysteries of this disease I guess.  Thanks to all you folks on this forum.  When ever I'm feeling overwhelmed with this disease I come here and get answers or just to relate to others who know how how hard this is! wink
Universal Colitis since 2003
Asacol 12 6 tablets per day
Mercaptopurine 1 1/2 1/2 tablets per day
hydrocortisone enema as needed (try not to use unless really, really needed)
Probiotic (lots!)
Fish Oil
Folic Acid (a must on 6-mp)
Iron (Solgar gentle iron - gentle on your tummy)
Multi Vitamin
Biotin
Lots of toasted french bread (especially when its actin up!)
Quiet time everyday to destress

You, who can take mesalamines are very lucky - I do believe they are the best medication for most with UC. I cannot tolerate them. I could have taken 6 MP ok but blood tests showed it was not working for me. Oh well!
