I was wondering if I could have some of youralls insight. I not not process Imuran very well and I am only on 25 mg and have low white blood count. I am have side effects of nausea and dizziness. My doctor says we could try methotrexate but I am scared of the liver biopsies. A lady in the remicade room said they will not put her out for the biopsies anymore and they are the most painful thing she has ever had done. I do not handle pain well. Does anyone have any experiences with this?

Hi there...why are you needing a liver biopsy? I'm missing the point of your question.

I responded to this post early, but must have somehow misposted it.

From what I've read, liver biopsies can be hit or miss, both in terms of pain/ aggravation and in terms of being an accurate indication of liver problems/ function.

I'm not sure what combination of drugs you're taking -- you're signature lists Remicade and Apriso and your post asks about Imuran -- but you should be aware that the FDA recommends strongly against taking drugs like Apriso along with Imuran because they can impair the effectiveness of Imuran and heighten the possibility of side effects.

quincy - The Imuran is lowering my white blood count too much so the next thing to try is methotrexate which requires liver biopsies to monitor liver functions

I need to update my sig line - I will ask the doctor about the Apriso with the Imuran

uh...there are many people on methotrexate and have never had liver biopsies. I must be missing something.

I'd nix any INVASIVE continual testing like that forever unless I was dying...

Is your doctor suspecting you have something else going on ??

I am on methotrexate, have been for about 6 weeks now. Doctor said they do not monitor your liver with biopsies. They still take blood once a month to look at my LFTs, but he specifically said they don't need to do biopsies. --maybe it has to do with the dose we're on. That being said, I also don't think the methotrexate is working. After being on it for 3 weeks I thought I was noticing an improvement, but now I'm starting to think it was just the prednisone, because I'm still seeing blood and mucous and I'm now only on 10mg of Pred. So, it's starting to look more and more like I'm going to have to say goodbye to mr colon. But no biopsies!! And my Doctor knows his stuff...he's no idiot, he's the co-director of the Chrones and Colitis Center at MGH.

The lady I spoke to was on it psoriasis but my doctor told me that everyone he has it on does the biopsies. I am going to talk to him about it because that is what scares me about it.
