Hello, everyone. I am new to the forum...

I was diagnosed with U.C. in March of 2007 and have been in unofficial remission since about September of that same year...But i seem to have a problem with my stools sometimes. I now take 2 Lialda pills, and 75mg of 6mp everyday. This seems to work most of the time, but off and on i usually have a tiny bit of blood in my stools. Whenever i tell the docs this, they put me on prednisone for a time and then it goes away. But then i stop taking it and my body just does the same things all over again. I feel fine most of the time, but i know that i occasionally lose some blood. Does this happen to anyone? I have gotten to the point with it where i don't even feel like i should call the docs anymore about it cuz my body just keeps repeating itself and i am fine.

Yes, I was the same way. My GI just told me to keep an eye on the bleeding and if it gets worse to let him know. My doc is very conservative regarding steroids. So he doesn't put me on the steroid enemas unless it's absolutely necessary. He goes by how I feel rather then symptoms. Plus too I've had this long enough to know when I am getting bad. If you are having bright red blood it can be a couple things. It can be a mild flare in which can be controlled with rectals meds such as Canasa or Rowasa (you don't have to be on pred if you don't want to be), or it can be from hemmeroids. The problem with long term uncontrolled bleeding is that it can cause anemia. So it's best to treat any sort of bleeding with a rectal med.

Oh and btw, welcome to Healingwell :)

Hi..welcome to the forum!

How sad the doc has you on prednisone...have you never had any rectal meds?

If so, push for them NOW and start using them, because the inflammation is obviously beyond a bit if you're bleeding.

I'd suggest Rowasa (if you're in the US) before the Canasa...that you can use for maintenance if you need to .

I always had a little blood, and it wasn't a concern. Your body makes more. It's not worth it to take prednisone just for that, in my view and experience.
49 year old female attorney, diagnosed UC/pancolitis 1985, no surgery but much suffering. Asacol maintenance for 20+ years; used prednisone & Rowasa for flares.  Probiotics (Ultimate Flora, 50 billion), salmon oil (omega-3) when I can remember.
August 2008 sought care of naturopathic doctor. Food sensitivity test showed wheat/gluten, other intolerances; eliminated wheat/gluten from my diet.
Bad flare in March, used prednisone. Humira denied, started Remicade 4/12 and doing great~ learning what normal is~ wow

Bleeding means the tissue is in a more fragile state. there are definitely other ways of dealing with it than a doctor consistently putting one on prednisone!

I don't see it as a reasonable option unless other methods have failed.

Awesome...Thank you very much for the advice! I agree with you all.

Yes, i have taken rectal meds, but they cost so stinkin much...so...idk. i'll maybe start them up again. I'll talk to my insurance and everything. Right now i'm in China helping teach English for the month of July. I go home in a week! So, i will have to talk to them when i return.
