I've been on 6mp for just about 3 months (started on May 4th) and today is my last day on Pred (have been on it since May 22nd).  I'm praying that the 6mp kicks in and actually works because I really dont want to get on Remicade.

Just thought I'd share with you all my hopes!

It does take a while to work fully (and for you to get over the nausea) but it really makes a difference eventually!

Been on 6MP for over six years now.  Unfortunately, it does not keep me out of flares.  For the first years on it, it did keep me symptom free a few years at a time but now the flares occur yearly and this is the second flare in only being in remission for seven months.  I had to go back on the prednisone too and been on it since June 11th, 30 mgm at the present time with 100 mgm of 6MP.  This is the highest dose my doctor has had me on the 6MP EVER.  I also have been taking Colazal faithfully as a maintenance drug (11 yrs of UC), Cort enemas nightly and Canasa suppositories in the morning.
Make sure your doctor carefully monitors your white cell count as mine dropped drastically when on only 75 mgm of the 6MP...down to 1.4.  He cut the 6MP down to 50 at that time but the white count bounce back to 4.0 and the doctor thinks that may have been the culprit for this flare.....body attacking its own immune system.  I will never understand this disease.
Seeing a GI specialist on Sept 24th over at the Univ of PA hosp in Philly as my doctor has expired all his treatment methods for me.  Remicade is not an option and at my age and other health issues, surgery is extremely risky.

Thanks everyone...today was my first day off of Pred in about 2 months...so far soooo good (fingers crossed).  I'm thinking my doc will up the dosage to 75mg the next time a meet him but I couldnt deal with the side affects on 100mg.

Does anyone know why it takes so long for the 6mp to kick in?

The way my GI described it is that 6mp takes a while to build up in your body. Our immune systems are so revved up that it's like an uphill battle for the 6mp to work but once it reaches the top, it's like a steam roller. I don't know the whole schematics behind it because I don't understand medicalnese lol.

But it seems to me that it makes sense that the stronger your immune system, the longer it will take for the 6mp to work. I think for me, if I had started on 6mp when I was younger, that it probably would not have worked. Because the older you get, the weaker your immune system gets. And since I am barely within the therepeudic (sp?) range now, I can just imagine how it would be if I was younger. It seems you have a very energetic immune system so it can take a little bit longer then the rest of us. But hang in there! When was the last time (if at all) you had a Prometheus Metabolites test to seeing if it was being processed properly?

Sherry....I have been on 6MP for six years and the only time I was tested for that Prometheus was when I first started taking 6MP.  The doctor never even mentioned having another test to see if it still was metabolyzying well in my system!!!  Thought he was a great GI....now beginning to wonder since his nurse told me they send quite a few of their patients over to the big guys in Philly when my GI doctor and his associates feel they cannot help them any longer.  This includes myself....going over to Philly Sept 24th.

I guess some GI's don't feel the need for the metabolites test. My GI is not one of them and when I first started he wanted to be sure it was actually DOING anything. That is how he tweaked my dosage. I've had a few since then. I think one of the reasons why most GI's don't use this test is because a lot of insurances don't cover it. My insurance does cover it and the initial Prometheus test, I only had to pay $65 out of the entire bill. But maybe you should ask your new GI about this test to see if he is willing to do it. At least you will know where you stand with your 6mp usage.
