I walked past a strip-mall spa the other day, and saw they offer colon hydrotherapy, also know as colon irrigation. For $85, they use a special machine to clean-our your entire colon with saline or something. Basically, a giant enema.

I know this would not help UC as it is, but it's an interesting concept. The problem with enemas is they only cover the bottom 1/3 of the colon and its hard to keep them in. If you used this machine to bathe the colon medicinally (cortisone, Vit-E, 5-ASA, etc) then maybe it would people off of systemic drugs. Might be inconvenient to do *every day*, but maybe once a week? The problem with colons is you can't put a little hydrocortosone cream on ulcers when they pop up, as you can on irritated skin.
Ben, 40

Symptoms diagnosed 4/07. Currently taking daily 8mg Prednisone, 100mg 6MP, calcium w/Vit D, 1/2 Prilosec (protects stomach from prednisone), Fosamax (trying to build bones back up from prednisone effects), Retin-A (helps with back acne from prednisone use), probiotic, multivitamin.

There is a warning about colonics. Ibd'ers are not to use them due to the friability of the intestinal walls. We had a local news woman do a colonic (she is also the local sponsor for the CCFA) and she said it wasn't bad, slightly uncomfortable. But she was expressing specifically that people that suffer from an IBD that it is not a wise course of action.
