I've been flaring for the past 4 weeks.  It got pretty bad and at one point was using the loo 16x-20x/day.  Took prednisone for two days and gave it up because I couldn't stand the side effects.  I have been on Cortenemas for the past three weeks, and went down to 6x-8x/day.  I'm currently tapering down these now.  These only helped with the left sided problems, and not with the pain I was experiencing on the right side of my colon.  I suspect I have colitis dispersed throughout pockets of my colon, but I'll have to wait till I get a scope.    With a combination of diet and rest, I'm down to 2x today with no mucus or blood. We'll see what tomorrow brings.  Also, I am supplementing with a probiotic from Walgreens.  It has no corn syrup or soy in it.  I also started smoking this week, but will gradually cut this down over the next couple days.

True remission only comes without the cortenemas and that will be determined a week from today and thereafter.  The SCD has helped me tremendously, but only after I cut out the almond flour and the yogurt.  Stools are started to firm up, and the urgency is gone.  I started my first day of work today, and didn't have to go in over 8 hours.  (That would be something if I soiled myself in the pharmacy.....)

Diagnosed 8/99. Suffered for almost 10 years. I am currently on the Specific Carbohydrate Diet and am nearing remission. I feel fantastic! I have lossed so many years to this disease.

Doc wanted to put me on 6-mp or Remicade, but I refused to take the medications! Currently on the Specific Carbohydrate Diet.  I'm in remission and life is like it always should have been.

Hi blue,

I've been in a flare up since June. Canasa is not working. Finally getting the ultrasound on my abdomen next week. Got appt with GI on 8/24/09. I've been reading about the SCD and it says to eat "natural cheese". Are you able to eat cheese? It absolutely kills me if I eat any.

Hi Blue
Glad to hear you are doing better. Wish you the best of luck getting this thing under control. I have been in a bad flare since about 9 weeks plus. Have been using Rowasa enemas nightly for all that time. What a drag! Also had to up my Colazol to 8 pills a day. Still can not seem to break the thing. I do not do well on Prednisone so I will have to see what is next on the agenda if it keeps up. Are you still on the SCD diet? I can eat farmers cheese without problem. The lactose is so minimal in it. I also tried the SCD when I first found out I had UC and could eat the specific cheeses on it. Can you tolerate the cheese? The thing that bugs me the most is I cannot seem to get rid of the blood even though it is not a huge amount.

I have absolutely no problems with hard cheeses like mild cheddar and colby.  I do have problems with the yogurt and to some extent the almond flour.  So I'm eating boiled fruits as my main carbo source.

blue,

You are lucky. I just look at cheese and it sends me running to the bathroom. Actually, almost everything I eat these days sends me running to the bathroom.
