Hey There,
I was diagnosed with uc 1 1/2 yrs ago, 26yrs old. It's been 3 weeks since I got out of hospital. I had a really bad flare and was pretty severe. I ended up there for 7 days. I am on 40mg steroids, melazine, enema and couple other vitamins. I am still bleeding light red and dark red blood. My running to the bathroom has slowed down alot and am only going couple times a day. For the last few days I have dropped steroids to 30mg. Doc said if bleeding still has not stopped In couple days I might have to go back to hopsital. I am not allowed to eat pretty much anything...I have not had any side effects of my medication as they said I was meant to swell up, get pimples ect. Seeing as I have not had anyside effects do you think my medication is not working?? Really confused and scared? Really need any advice ??

No - the side effects are just possible side effects -it is good that you are not having any. I was on pred for three months and only had a few minor side effects after being on it for about 4-6 weeks. It does not mean that it is not working. I know some people have to start out on 60 mg of pred and then tapper down. If you are still having significant bleeding you may need to ask your doctor if you really should start to tapper yet...

Why are they considering sending you back to the hospital if your symptoms are decreasing? I have never had a hospital stay and have had times where I was going to the bathroom 10 times a day and bleeding everytime. I can't imagine being sent back to the hospital if you are only going to the bathroom a couple of times a day now.

Also, are you on a steroid enema too?

Lastly, what type of diet restrictions do you have? My doctor has always told me that unless I personally see a difference (which I have not) that diet in general will not affect my symptoms. We are 100% sure my UC is due to an autoimmune system problem so diet is not a factor - again unless there are foods that I just notice affecting my BM's...

My guess is you were not put on a high enough dose of steroids for the severity of your flare and/or were started on a taper too quickly.

In spite of what doctors will say, my experience is that the foods you eat and the consistency makes a huge difference when you're in a bad flare. You want foods that will easy for your impaired system to digest. Broths and soups are great. Veggies and fruits need to be peeled and cooked to softness. Soups and veggies can even be pureed. Safest meats are tender white meat of chicken or turkey that's baked, roasted or broiled.

Even doctors often prescribe a low residue diet for folks in severe flares or just out of the hospital.

Diagnosed with ulcerative colitis spring 1999. Have been in remission for years with only a few minor blips. Scope on 6/22 showed no inflammation at all.

Maintenance dose sulfasalazine. Probiotics, vitamin D, fiber supplement and fish oil caps. George's aloe vera juice and l-glutamine for gut healing. Mostly grain-free and dairy-free low carb diet.
