It's easy, just do what I do. Eat everything in sight! Even if I'm not hungry I'll be cramming it in my mouth!

First Diagnosed Feb 2007
Significant flare June-July '07 treated with Prednisone
Asocol X 6 per day
Largely in remission with some minor flares treated with Entocort
Currently in flare X 2 weeks

One helpful tip is try and drink extra fluids rather then eat everytime you want to eat, and try not to eat high sodium foods as that can increase weight-gain from pred as well.

Hi singnrun, my son, also in highschool (going to be a senior) is on pred and is hungry all the time. He keeps coming into the kitchen saying, "I think I'm having a growth spurt" and I say, "I hope not, it's just the prednisone". The reason I hope he is not growing anymore is he is 6' 3.25" VERY TALL and hard to shop for!! I can't really help you other than what has been said. Good luck!

I did want to ask you about the different things that you take. How did you come up with that? Do you choose your self? Do you parents study and choose? Did your doctor recommend that stuff? I ask because my son doesn't take any interest in his disease and treatment at all. Doesn't come to any web sites, research or anything. I have asked him what he will do when he is on his own and he said whatever the doctor tells him. I tend to study alot and talk with the doctor about what we should do.

Anyway, just curious.

Have you tried chewing gum? Sugar free candies? Something like that...

I haven't been on pred ever, and the entocort made me lose my appetite mostly. I still have hangups about eating anyway, so even at my hungriest I wouldn't eat unless I knew I wouldn't be "going out."

On prednisone, all I wanted was chocolate and salty things. If you can handle nuts with light salt or no salt- that helped. If you are on low fiber and can't do nuts how about baked chips? I also loved cheese! I did low fat or low sugar options of what I wanted.

I always tried to portion out my snacks before I sat down. If I sat down with a bag of chips, I would eat the bag. Even if I get up for a second portion, I still would stop before I ate too much. Also, drinking water is supposed to help but I know the pasty mouth would make me not want to drink plain water and it would make me feel like I was retaining more water. Pop-sicles take a lot of time to eat and keep my mouth cool and occupied.

I hope this helps. Good luck.
