Hey All,

I'm going to the OBGYN shortly and am going to talk to them about Birth Control pills. I was wondering if anyone has any good experiences taking Lialda and BC? Does the Lialda affect it at all? Which pill do you take? Hopefully I can get a few good answers before I leave for the doc in 30 minutes.

Thanks!

I'm on Apriso, which is pretty similar to Lialda, and am on BC. Neither one seems to affect the other. I use a generic tri-level ortho novum.

Diagnosed with pancolitis on 1/30/09

I would avoid Yasmin and Yaz ... there have been some issues with these two and may complicate your UC symptoms ... I have found that Loestrin and Orthocyclin (??can remember proper name) are relatively safe ...

I think a lot of people here seem to be alright on birth control. But since I've started it I've gotten some inflammation again. But I'm not sure if it's the birth control. So if you get any please let me/us know so maybe we'll both have a clue =)

I take Asacol and Yaz. I don't like Yaz, I will be switching but I haven't noticed any bad effects from the combined medications.
Diagnosed with mild proctitis in March 2007: Treated with Canasa (as needed)
December 08: Began treating with Asacol 400mg (9/day) + Canasa 2x/day - Anemic
May 09: Off Canasa, taking Asacol (9/day)
Back on Canasa every other night + Asacol (9/day) + Probiotics + Iron
Reducing to 6 Asacol/day + Canasa + Probiotics + Iron - So far so good!!! -SPOKE TOO SOON! Back to 9/day...

I was on Kariva for 3 months and it caused on awful year-long flare, which resulted in Remicade and almost surgery. I will never take bc pills again.

Well, you said you decided not to, but to let you know I take Sprintec or Previfem (I think that's the generic one). I've been on it since I was 16.

I don't think that it is safe for a person with Inflammatory Bowel Disease to take oral birth control pills.  The majority of them, if not all, contain hormones which tend to send you into a flare up.  Doctors believe that it is the estrogen that causes the flare but it may also be the progesterone.  I took Yasmine when I was newly married and it sent me into a bad flare.  I am currently on Lialda and had an IUD which I believe is the best form of birth control for someone with IBD.  I had the 10 year copper IUD called the Paragard and which does not contain any hormones.  The alternative is a 5 year IUD called the Mirena, but it contains hormones in like Progesterone.  Good luck to you with your decision.  The only downside of the Paragard IUD is that Day 1 of your period is extremely heavy and it tends to last a couple days longer with cramping- but it works and doesn't cause a flare!

Right now, there are a LOT of those lawyer commercials targeting users of Yaz and Yasmin so obviously a large enough percentage of women are having issues with it. My problem is I am almost 38, can still have kids, but also going through perimenopause (friggin hot flashes, night sweats etc.) Early menopause is common on my mom's side of the family so I don't believe it is UC related symptoms. Therefore, I need birth control ... can't do IUDs cause my body rejects them! Ugh ... I had to stop taking bc pills temporarily but am going back next month for a new Rx ... I am not sure what I will get.

I had spotting on Yaz too. I stopped Yaz recently. I've heard too many horror stories and the positives were never there for me. It didn't really help my PMS or do anything more for my skin than ortho or an older pill. I have heard the incidence of stroke on Yaz is much higher. Must be the new progestin that hasn't been used as long as the ones in the older pills.

The problem for me is that I get bad acne if I don't have the right pill. Yaz helped but so does ortho tri. I have tried others and they didn't help like Yaz and Ortho. I am scared to try a pill with the older progestin because those are a lot stronger and can cause pimples. I think Ortho is a 3rd generation progestin. I know a lot about this because I did some serious reading when a DR prescribed me seasonique (with levonorgestrol). I am pretty sure seasonique could cause me a serious breakout. I may try it sometime but not now because I have meetings and I can't be the lady with the pimple face. People don't like to work with the pimple faced lady. Not to sound shallow because I don't judge people on pimples but the people who I meet with seem to. I hate that ortho has 7 days of placebos, that was the one good thing about Yaz, short period, but then again, the spotting was a bit out of control.
