I thought I would give you all an update with my experience of using vsl#3 for 8 months and getting off salofalk.

When I first started vsl#3 I had an upset system lots of diarrhea, gas. Bleeding once in a while maybe every few weeks.
At about 1 month the gas and diarrhea from vsl#3 stopped.

At about the 4 month stage no more beelding and I havent seen it since.

After 8 months I believe it may have colonized - I can skip taking a few days and I can eat sugar without bleeding.

My conclusion is that it may be possible to re-colonize with contant long term use and that bad side effects may go away as the body adjusts.

Thanks all for reading.

Crazytrain, it's great that VSL #3 is working well for you.

You've listed a lot of other probiotics in your signature...are you still taking all of them?

Do you think you would be fine if you stopped them and only continued using VSL#3, or is it the combination of all these probiotics that's working for you?

I would love to know this too. I have suffered from a mild/moderate case of UC for the past 20 years and it's getting to the point that I am considering surgery because all possible meds don't work anymore. I have taken pro-biotics including VSL#3 but not long enough to know if it truly helped.
Would love to hear the feedback on this one.

Some years ago, my doctor told me about VSL3 but said it wasn't available in the US. I took PB8 instead, at her recommendation that it was basically the same. I took it for a couple years without seeing any significant improvements.

Is VSL#3 available in different brands? If so, I wonder if one is better than the others and if you would tell us which brand you take. (Sorry, that might be a stupid question.)

Thanks!

To answer your questions.

I was taking quite a mix of probiotics for about a month or so - and then I realized its a lot of effort and money. I dont know what effect if any the other pro-Bs had but they gave quite a variety of strains in the begining. So I stopped taking those and only took vsl#3 from then on.

It also doesnt matter what probiotic you take - what really matters is the strains and quantity which is the same in all vsl#3. The quantity is up to you but I think to have an effect you really must take a lot - like 500 billion which is 1 vsl#3 sachet. To put things in perspective, the over the counter probiotics are usually around 10 billion, so youd need 50 of those little pills shocked

I'm strongly thinking about starting to take this. I will have to talk with my parents this evening to see what we can do about it.

I looked online and found that my insurance will cover it. They just don't specify the price or quantity.
