Hey there- Pretty new to this forum and have really appreciated reading through what everyone else has endured and overcome. I am in an active flare of colitis since October 2008 and just feeling really exhausted and mentally dull right now. I started the Specific Carb Diet last week. It's been tough and I haven't really noticed much of a difference (actually worse the past couple of days). So, just needing some positive energy from others who have been through this.  I think it's the exhausted feeling that's getting me down more than anything right now.  I started the Specific Carb diet in order to avoid the Remacaid treatments that the GI doc was wanting me to start on. I'm going to give the diet a few more weeks to work before I make my decision on the Remacaid. Not sure why I'm so hesitant about that treatment other than the difficulty arranging work/childcare to get the treatments.

thanks all!

I read the book about SCD and if I recall, it can take about a month or two before the whole you will get worse before you get better kind of thing. I, personally, do not have the will power to endure such diets. I wish you luck though and hopefully this diet will start to work it's magic for you. However, do not hesitate to contact your doctor if you get a ton worse!

Thanks, Sherry! It's tough sticking with the diet, especially for a foodie like myself! Cooking and eating good food was one of my main hobbies. ;-)

I hope that you start feeling better soon! I also don't think I'd have the willpower to to the SCD and I love to cook and eat like you do!

I find every diet and supplement will only help for a little while. I do love Remicade...

Have you had your blood tested, to see if you have become anemic? Are you getting B-12? I had a few shots and felt better. It's when I get anemic that I lose my energy.
49 year old female attorney, diagnosed UC/pancolitis 1985, no surgery but much suffering. Asacol maintenance for 20+ years; used prednisone & Rowasa for flares.  Probiotics (Ultimate Flora, 50 billion), salmon oil (omega-3) when I can remember.
August 2008 sought care of naturopathic doctor. Food sensitivity test showed wheat/gluten, other intolerances; eliminated wheat/gluten from my diet.
Bad flare in March, used prednisone. Humira denied, started Remicade 4/12 and doing great~ learning what normal is~ wow

Crazybug..welcome to the forum!

I'm wondering why you're not trying any rectal meds at all? that might help during the tapering of pred.

Do you lower the pred by 10mg or by 5?

I agree with quincy, rectal meds may make a difference for you. I had a really long/bad flare and I had to stay on pred for three months with a SLOW taper. I also had to stay on Canasa and Lialda while tappering. I am still on Lialda but only use Canasa and Cort Enemas as needed now...when I began to flare...I have been able to at least control and lessen the flares now. I would not try Remicade (especially if scheduling is an issue) until you tried a SLOW SLOW pred taper and also treated from both ends for a while. Do you know that carbs bother you or are you just giving this diet a shot?
Dx 2006 right after the birth of my daughter
Lialda 3 pills a day!
Canasa daily
Probiotics Daily
