Hi i took the generic for colazal 3 hours ago, i took 3 pills at once, and now i have really bright yellow urine and bright yellow in my bowel movments.
Currently i have had the runs for 2 weeks straight, not being able to leave the house, and extreme stomach pain. I am 19 years old and do not Have any medical insurance and cannot afford to go to any doctors. I just found a bottle of the generic that i had not finished, it does nto expire till december, so i dont think it has to do with being old or anythign like that. i think i remember this happeneing a few times when i was on it earlier in the year, is this normal?
Does it mean that i am not absorbing the medicine?
Or does this mean something else is wrong??
I am so confused and frustrated.

I know some people have had problems with generic colazal and had to switch back to the original brand.

What other meds are you on?

Colazal's typically taken as a maintenance drug even when you're in remission, but it seems you're taking colazal only when you have a flare. Is that right? If you're only starting back on it now then maybe it will take a few days for your body to get used to it.

I always have yellow in my stool when I am on colazal. I am not sure about the urine as i have not noticed a change in color. Are you drinking enough water and staying well hydrated?
UC since 2002- remission for 6 years
recent flare 06/09
Currently on Colazal, multivitamin, probiotics, fish oil
just tapered off prednisone

If I don't drink enough water, my urine turns a bright yellow (think neon) and it wasn't like that before I started on Colazal. So I think you may need to increase your fluid intake. I sometimes too have yellow stool but keep an eye on that and mention it to your doctor if it continues because it can also indicate liver issues.

It's typical of Colazal to have bright yellow urine-- especially 2-3 hrs after you've taken a dose. Like Sherry says, drink plenty of water throughout the day while you're on it. Original Colazal was my best 5-ASA med ever, but I had to go on the generic a yr ago due to insurance requirements. The generic (made by Watson Pharma) gave me severe headaches-- so I went back to brandname Colazal. I think it has been altered recently by Salix; it still seems to have good anti-inflammatory properties but doesn't control D like it used to-- when it also caused dry mouth. In your situation it should be better than nothing-- you'll know whether it's helping in a week or two. It would take a few months to subdue a moderate flare, though, judging from personal experience & what my gastro says about it. If you have pancolitis, you might do better on something else. / Old Hat (30 yrs with left-sided UC ... [etc.])
