Okay, I have some questions, I think I'll go with the most important first:

1. I have a sneaking suspicion that my birth control is causing some inflammation. (This might entail more than one question lol.) I haven't had kids, can I still get an IUD? If so, what is the insertion/placement like? I read about the cervix being dialated, that doesn't sound cool. And does anyone notice the string? Also, would the birth control shot be more or less systemic? Has anyone tried it? I'm not prepared to go off birth control or use the calander method (I forgot the name, I hope you get me).

2. I know people sometimes flare after/during antibiotic use. Shortly before I started birth control, I was on an anti-fungal. Could that cause inflammation? I'm still curious even though I'm pretty sure my birth control is causing it (or maybe azathioprine is quitting on me, who knows).

3. I got a hemmie a couple weeks ago, and although it is much smaller and not painful anymore, I think I might give in soon and go get it checked out. What is removal like? Or what else might the doctor do?

4. Can Rowasa cause hair loss?

Thanks, I know that was long! lol

Just thought I'd bump this up because I'd like to find out things fast, the Rowasa doesn't seem to be working as well as it was before

Well, I am on the pill and don't seem to have any issues with it. Before I ever started the pill, though, it seemed like I'd have light diarrhea the day before and the day I started. I stopped having that problem when I started the pill. I had it again, to some degree, when I went off the pill prior to trying to get pregnant. You CAN be very accurate with charting (the best book that explains this is Taking Charge of Your Fertility)...it's a lot more than just the "calendar method." You have to track your temperature, cervical position, and cervical fluid. And you use condoms during your fertile period (but as I'm assuming you're not married, you should be using condoms all the time anyway!).

Ummmm...I'm clueless!

If it's not causing problems, I wouldn't have it removed. Doing so can open a big ole can of worms.

4. Can Rowasa cause hair loss?
I suppose it could, because I know it's a potential side effect for oral mesalamines. However, as so little of it is systemically absorbed, I'd be a little surprised if it is.

Ok, I did a quick google search, and hair loss is listed as a side effect of rowasa.

As far as the birth control goes, I also had a flare up after taking Yasmine. I recommend the IUD because you can get a 10year copper IUD that does not have any hormones in it which will not cause a flare. The string is not visible at all. In fact, your OB will tell you to feel for it to check placement but I rarely did because it was hard to find. You can take the IUD out at anytime and get pregnant with no problems. The IUD is a nice option for people with UC because of the fact that they're aren't any hormones in it. There are two options, though, the Mirena which is a 5 year that contains hormones like progesterone. It is believed that the estrogen is the hormone that causes a flare but who knows! The Paragard is the 10 year one. The only thing is that it causes longer and heavier periods- I know it sucks but it's the best option I think. Day 1 of your period is extremly heavy and then things tend to calm. Oh yeah, cramping is also a side effect that usually happens Day 1 as well.

2) I also flared after taking Amoxicillin. Some docs recommend taking probiotics while you are on antibiotics just so that your normal flora is not completely wiped out.

3) Not sure about the hemmie..

4) I have heard that Lialda causes hair loss and Rowasa is in the same group of drugs- the 5ASA's so could be.

Thanks guys. Nutz, do you know what the placement of the IUD is like? That's what scares me I think lol
