So I'm having to take two Loperamide before a six hour a work shift just to make it through and sometimes that cuts it close.  Some days I take as many as four throughout the day.  Is there any substantial risk?  Also I'm wondering if I should be taking metamucil to firm me up.  I've been on 40mg pred a day for five weeks now with little improvement if any.  I did start the spinach and sunflower seed diet a  few days ago and It seemed that I had a better day immediatley, but today has been not so great.

Well, it dehydrates me. I have only taken four in a day when doing things like airports or long trips. I usually take one as soon as my feet hit the floor in the mornings. I still go every single day at least 2 X, so i really don't worry much about the side affects. Can make a little drowsy if driving.

Doing the pred/loper and still seeing ALOT of frequency would concern me.

I chew two Fiber Choice things in the morning and I think it helps. It sure doesn't hurt. Also I know a lot of people here don't like carbs much, I don't know how sensitive you are to them, but when I have urgency or D I eat starchy things and it helps slow it down/bulk it a little.

Durango kid,

Since you've been at 40mg for 5 weeks and not seen much of an effect, have you considered speaking with your doctor about bumping up the prednisone to a higher dose to get into remission soon and then taper down? ....especially as prednisone should normally have an effect very soon if it's going to work for you at a certain dosage -- sooner than 5 weeks at least.

That way, if it's not going to work then at least you can then start tapering off it instead of continuing on it without benefit.

Metamucil has helped me a lot. It bulks up BMs, resulting in fewer BMs too.

I agree with Rio...you've been on the 40mg for too long with no improvement. When I started pred, my doc said that if 40mg didn't start to make a difference within a few days, he'd bump me up to 60mg. I also had an interview coming up, so HAD to get better quickly, and I'd been really, really sick for a long time.

Also, I'd look into probiotics and rectal meds.

Ooops, now I see you're already on probiotics, so ignore that part. But don't ingore the rectal meds part....mesalamine enemas are a godsend for most of us!

I guess if you take too much loperamide or immodium it can totally block you up and give you trouble. So just be sure you let it wear off later in the day so you can clean out! You'll know when you are taking too much, it's very uncomfortable even if you have relief from urgency.

I cannot handle fiber when I'm flaring especially, but it seems to be an individual thing.

All the supplements and diet changes only ever worked temporarily for me.
49 year old female attorney, diagnosed UC/pancolitis 1985, no surgery but much suffering. Asacol maintenance for 20+ years; used prednisone & Rowasa for flares.  Probiotics (Ultimate Flora, 50 billion), salmon oil (omega-3) when I can remember.
August 2008 sought care of naturopathic doctor. Food sensitivity test showed wheat/gluten, other intolerances; eliminated wheat/gluten from my diet.
Bad flare in March, used prednisone. Humira denied, started Remicade 4/12 and doing great~ learning what normal is~ wow

Thanks for all of your posts.  We've just been extending the pred for one more week at a time.  I want to go to hydrocortizone enemas if it doesn't improve by next week.  It worked for me last time, but is so expensive with no insurance.  I'll also mention increasing the pred dose and Mesalamine enemas.  I'm seeing improvement today.  Less blood and more formed stools.

Thanks again,  Durango Kid
