What is the difference between Imuran and 6MP? Are they basically the same as far as immunosuppresants? Are the side effects a lot different? Wondering because I think I am heading up that road. I am still in a big flare since May and have tried nightly Rowasa enemas, Colazol with increasing and Colocort enemas (which I cannot tolerate).

From what I've read I feel like less people on here complain of side-effects from imuran. But I very well may be wrong. I just know I like it.

They are basically the same medication. Imuran essentially breaks down as 6MP in the liver. Usually the doctor will do a Prometheus test first to see which one should work better. When that is decided they put you on a low dose and do frequent blood testing to check your CBC and liver enzyme count. Once those are fine then the doc will usually raise the dosage.

What's a Prometheus test? I know before I was diagnosed they tested my blood trying to figure things out, but it didn't show a thing. My red blood cell count was actually high, and it didn't show colitis or anything. (Sorry that was kinda ot lol)

I take Imuran, and I'm doing well. It's been 8 months on it so far total. I get headaches and extreme tiredness...but I think there's another problem there that needs to be sorted out.

Also, about the blood testing, I will have gone 4 months without seeing my doc before my next appt. I was getting weekly blood draws in the beginning, then monthly, and now it's 4 months... I was tested at my dose with Imuran now, 100mg. I feel like I should go in for a blood check up just because. I don't think anything is wrong, but, is it supposed to be monthly while you're on Imuran?

I think I'm supposed to get my blood tested every 2-3 months on Imuran. Same for you I imagine.

Ok. I just wasn't sure... I know my doctor knows best, but it never hurts to ask.

A Prometheus test is a blood test to determine what kind of liver enzymes you have that in turn determines which you would do better on; Imuran or 6mp. Prometheus labs is the only lab that does this and it is in CA. After the initial Prometheus test, sometimes the GI will send out intervals of blood for the Prometheus metabolites test to determine the Imuran/6mp levels and to be sure you are at the proper theurepedic (sp?) levels.
