For those of you that have taken Asacol...

I just started today, I took 2 in the morning and 2 at lunch. I was fairly nauseous this morning when I got up (before I took anything) but went on with my day and took the meds. Now 2 and 1/2 hours after my lunch dose I'm vomiting...would it happen that fast if it was a side effect or could I have a bug? What do I do now? Not take it for a day or 2 and see if I have a bug?

Thanks for any help.

Also, the doc put me on an antibiotic and one of it's side effects is nausea and vomiting...sigh.

So did you also start the antibiotic today, or did you start it yesterday? My guess, if you started it all today, that it's a bug, since you felt bad when you woke up. If it's one of the meds, it might be hard to figure out which one is causing it unless you stop them. Maybe give your doc a call.

I started it all today. Took 2 asacol, 1 antibiotic and 1 folic acid at breakfast which consisted of a granola bar. Took 2 asacol and 1 antibiotic at lunch. Then started vomiting 2 1/2 hours later. But I had felt crummy all day. I'm REALLY hoping it's a bug! But I'm thinking of not taking anything tonight b/c of the vomiting and I don't want to waste the med. The asacol came back up whole (sorry that's gross, but a pertinent detail I guess).

Oh...and what do you make of this? Today...after taking a probiotic for 1 1/2 weeks...I had nice formed stool with just a smidge of blood and no mucus! This is the first time that happened since April!!! Could it be the probiotic? I'm still all for taking the asacol, don't get me wrong but I was just surprised is all!

Asacol made me very nauseous when I took it as well. I stopped taking it and the nausea stopped.

I would lean towards the antibiotic rather than the asacol.

What antibiotic are you on?

A granola bar isn't breakfast.

The antibiotic is flagyl, and now that I've read about it, holy crap, why am I on it? I've never taken it before, actually never heard of it. And yesterday I did some reading about it and it is scary!

And I know that a granola bar isn't breakfast but I never want to eat in the morning, morning is the worst time of day for me and my stomach. Seems like lots of people feel that way.

And I was sick most of the night. Surely 2 asacol wouldn't make me feel that bad? I'm feeling a bit better this morning, not great but not as bad as yesterday. I might give it a day and then try again.

Amy...I have a friend who was on flagyl and she was nauseated and feeling sick all the time. She cannot take it at all....plus her feet went numb and very painful..yikes

Can you have scrambled eggs and maybe plain toast? that might be easier to digest than the granola.

You could call the doc and ask to be taken off the flagyl and maybe put on another med?

Yeah, some have no problems on flagyl, others do....coin toss sometimes.

You could also ask the doc for an antinausea or antispasmodic to hopefully help with that.

I don't think it's the asacol....you won't know unless you go off the flagyl.

This totally sucks you're in this situation....

Try and eat something but in small portions.

hang tough.....

Maybe you can call the GI's office and see if he has a cancellation that you can get in earlier?

Call your doctor. I'm with Q... I'd suspect the antibiotic first, but you can't just stop and restart antibiotics without medical advice.

well, I had only taken one flagyl that stayed down and I think I've decided not to take it. It is such a powerful antibiotic! What would the antibiotic help anyway? I had all the stool samples before the colonoscopy to check for the bacteria problems. None of that showed up. And at this point, what's a week before I go see the GI. I am feeling much better today. I'm going to start the asacol again and see what happens.

And quincy...getting in next Friday was because of a cancellation...it was going to be mid-sept if not for that! I would be going crazy! Plus that is a day that my husband can get off work so he can come with me. I'm thinking 2 sets of ears in this situation would be good. Plus I'm going to take a list of questions and a pen and paper. I hope this doc is ok with that! lol

Good idea if you only took one or two pills....I'd do the same thing to be truthful.

Plus, you probably puked up most of the med anyway initially....so even better yet.

Totally think it's a great idea to bring your husband and yes...questions and pen are necessary. Probably better than a laptop..lol unless you have a teeny one..lol.

Regarding your other posting, I just want to add that CD can mimic itself as UC when it's in early stages....

Great you got in earlier than mid Sept...whew!

Not all types of infections are easily detected. Sometimes multiple stool samples are required over a period of days.

I actually did do the samples over 3 days as instructed by the doc.

But don't worry, I am going to tell the GI that I was given that prescription but didn't take it. If he wants me to take it I will. But I will explain the nausea, vomiting and I didn't know what was causing it. So I'm going to start the asacol back first and then if he wants me to take the flagyl I will. I still have them.
