I had blood tests for chloresteral, etc. and all tests were normal but trigycerides.  Now I know sugar causes mine to be high - for years.  Omedga 3 fish oil capsules - 1000 mg. twice a day is precribed.  I have taken them before and some caused me burping fish because of GERD, I guess.  Any suggestions?  I also  know they could be good for inflammation of UC.
I went on vacation and took Imodium and pepto all week - dealing with getting back to normal - whatever that is for me - hope that happens in a couple days.  I was fine on vacation except waking up with nausea - but that happens no matter what I do - every day usually.

I'm taking flax seed oil - just started a few weeks ago. A friend with Crohns recommended it because he said some fish are being harvested too much to supply the market with fish oil - so I skipped that whole issue and started on the flax seed oil. I haven't done a ton of research to see how they compare, dosage-wise.... but I'm grateful to be skipping the fish burps!
Diagnosed UP 1983, Azulphidine

Coromega is my favorite. It is a little squeeze pack, kind of like to-go packets of ketchup from fast food restaurants and comes in flavors - orange is the best (I think). You can go to their web site and order a free sample. I get mine from iherb for a good price.

Supposedly this product has better bio availability than other products because of the way it is made. I just know there is no fishy after taste at all. Even my kids like them.

Julie - that looks great and I LOVE orange anything.  Would one be equivalent to 1000 mg. or what?  I could not find that info.  I am supposed to take 2000 mg. a day.

Thanks so much!  ElaineNY

Each packet has 2000mg fish oil, 650mg Long chain omega 3 fatty acids, 350mg EPA, 230mg DHA

If I'm allowed to do this, you can see all the stuff at iherbs site: http://www.iherb.com/Coromega-ERBL-Omega3-Squeeze-Orange-Flavor-90-Squeeze-Packets-2-5-g-Each/3617?at=0

It comes in orange, orange with hint of chocolate and lemon lime. Orange is my favorite - kind of tastes like orange sherbert.

Good luck!

I found where I could get 30 at the Coromega store.  Would not want to order too many until I know it if "agrees" with me.  I am very sensitive to all medication/supplements, etc.

Thanks!  ElaineNY

Elaine, I take the Enteric coated fish oil capsules and I don't have any problems with them repeating on me.  Have you tried them?  I am going to buy the flaxseed oil capsules today. Do they work the same way as the fish oil?  Should I take them in place of the fish oil or take both?  My friend swears by flaxseed oil capsules but I think she overdoses on all kinds of vitamins and other stuff she buys online.

I also take enteric coated fish oils with no issues. Fisol is the brand I use, get them at Whole foods. I hear they are better for you too because the coating releases in the intestines not in the stomach, so more gets absorbed.

Weird, I'm watching 'The Doctors' right now and they just said that if you can, get the Marine Fish Oil supplements because the ingredients aren't oxidized -- they're pure. They also don't have a fishy taste to them.

Now that I am thoroughly confused.  Yes, I have taken the enteric and sometimes they "come back" up on me.

I don't know anything about flax seed oil.  Doctor told me to take Omega 3.

As for the Fisol - maybe I would order tha online - haven't decided which to try first. We don't have a Whole Foods here.  Whatever I get it will probably be online as I don't get out much - can't walk with my bad knees.  I just get groceries and occasionally to Walmart or Target with cart.  (and to the doctor, of course)

There is some other stuff that I tried called Mila that you can order online. It has 3000 mg of Omega-3's in it. I had to put it on my food so I couldn't taste it. I would have said it did wonders for me (I have been feeling great for months on it) but 2 weeks ago started to feel crummy again. Definately not the wonder drug I was hoping for. But if all you want is Omega-3's it is worth a shot. I do know someone that took it and had Chrons and could not tolerate it. and it is kinda expensive.

Flaxseed oil is another source of omega-3, although I think most folks agree fish oil is the superior source. I hedge my bets and use a little of both.
Diagnosed with ulcerative colitis spring 1999. Have been in remission for years with only a few minor blips. Scope on 6/22 showed no inflammation at all.

Maintenance dose sulfasalazine. Probiotics, vitamin D, fiber supplement and fish oil caps. George's aloe vera juice and l-glutamine for gut healing. Mostly grain-free and dairy-free low carb diet.

I think it best to take both fish and flax oil as they represent different types of food sources (animal and plant based). Although flax oil will be converted into the same omega-3 fatty acids found in fish oil (DHA and EPA), it just strikes me as a good idea to mimic as close as possible the kind of diet that is optimal for fighting inflammation. For me, that includes omega-3's from both fish and plants.

Of course, actually eating fatty fish and green leafy vegetables, walnuts, etc. would be good too!
Diagnosed with UC in 1990.
Current Meds: Sulfasalazine & Folic Acid.
Supplements: fish oil, flax oil, glucosamine, CoQ10, fiber, aloe vera juice, probiotics.
Other: Raw Milk for breakfast. Currently exploring a raw milk fast one day/week.

Yes, eating the fish, etc. would be good. Unfortunately, I seem to be sensitive to salmon and also shellfish - darn - I like it too.  I was instructed not to eat raw foods or nuts until in remission.  I will do as instructed and take 2000 mg. omega 3 for a while - hope it helps my UC as well as my trigylcerides!

The key terms in the Mayo clinic article are "in large doses" and "with inadequate water". I suspect much the same could be said of other fiber sources.

As I posted in a different thread, it is also not a good idea to take more than three or four tablespoons of raw flaxseed/flaxmeal a day because of possible complications with the thyroid (baking flaxmeal eliminates that problem). Taken in moderation though, flaxmeal is considered a healthy food source.

But then we have been talking about flax oil and not flaxmeal or flaxseeds in this thread. The two are quite different.
