Ok so that I am prepared...

I haven't been treated with and other end medicines yet.   I will not go back on pred again unless I am hospitalized...Sorry just not happening...

Anyways..Are other end steriods just as side effect producing as pred?  This time when he tries to offer me different medications I will be more informed...

yes they can if you're sensitive to them. many don't have side effects, but some do.

have you not tried the 5ASA enemas? If you can't use them, put that in your signature so we don't keep suggesting them.

I've used the steroid enemas quite a bit with hardly any noticeable side effects. I, too, would reallllllly rather not go back on prednisone unless I can't avoid it!
Diagnosed UP 1983, Azulphidine

Asacol - 16 pills a day
Metamucil - 2 doses a day

I'm pretty sure that the proctofoam has the least amount of steroids...next is the cortifoam and then the colocort or other steroid liquid enemas.

I am very newly diagnosed and the pred plus my starting smoking took me out of flare...I haven't really had the oportunity to try and of the rectal meds...But based on the way my body reacts when I go with out smoking I will flare then so I want to be prepared..Because the first thing any of my doctors always suggest is pred...

which is a sad fact about not caring for patients when first-line meds are available.

Educate yourself.....I do STRESS that fact.

There are other meds that can work.

Rectal steroids generally have little to no side effects unless you are extremely sensitive to steroids. Rectal steroids are considered topical (like steroid skin cream and steroid eye drops.) This means they are not systemaic and generally produce little to none of the systematic side effects oral pred can cause.
Dx 2006 right after the birth of my daughter
Lialda 2 pills a day
Cort-enemas as needed
Canasa as needed
Probiotics Daily

I HATE PREDNISONE!!!  But it is the only drug that helps me into remission.  I am now tapered down to 10 mgm...yippeee, but been on it since June 11th.  If the doctor would just start me at 40 and stop messing around with starting me on 20 mgm (which does absolutely nada) maybe I could have been off it sooner.  I take a Cort enema nightly and Canasa in the morning and I do think they help a lot.  Started Flaxseed oil capsules today in addition to the probiotics and fish oil.  I see improvement in my ulcerative proctitis but now have to go for a stat CBC tomorrow because the 100 mgm of 6MP lowered my white count to 1.6....ugh.  Off the 6MP for two weeks.  I will NEVER go back to that high of a dose again......thinking really of never going back on that crap.
62 yr old granny. South Jersey
Diagnosed with ulcerative proctitis in 1998 in hospital
Hospitalized (2nd time) in May 2008
Meds as of June 09: Colazal (6 per day), 6MP (50 mgm), Probiotic (upped to 3 per day), Fish oil capsule, calcium, multivitamin, Cort enema nightly, Canasa in morning.  Also taking Benicar and Toprol to control high blood pressure.  Getting old is a b****.
