I went to the OBGYN on July 29th.... she gave me a prescription for Flagyl.... I think she said it was for a bacterial infection. Well.. I hadn't been on birth control so she gave me Nuvaring...which I've been on before and it never hurt me. Well I started that after my last period... and I never took the flagyl cuz I was afraid it would hurt my stomach...

I continued lightly bleeding for a few weeks... it stopped for about a week... and now its bleeding again... and I don't know if it's cuz my periods on its way, if I've let the bacterial infection get worse and its causing hte bleeding... or if the Nuva ring is causing it..

IM so nervous and scared.. I want to take the flagyl to see if it'll stop it, but I'm SO afraid my stomach will react.. I've taken the Ring out too cuz if that's the cause I want to know too.

What do you think?

If the Nuvaring didn't bother you before, I think I might stay on it. And you could try the Flagyl, just make sure you get some probiotics in there with it and I think that will help prevent any bad things the Flagyl might cause. If that doesn't fix it then it might be the Nuvaring. Good luck!

I believe you. You might ask about what the good probiotics are (VSL#3 is good I guess, but expensive?) and when you take them, take them at a different time of day than the Flagyl. Has Flagyl given you problems before?
Also I'm kinda wondering why she put you on birth control and an antibiotic at the same time... doesn't make sense to me. In addition, seems like it might be a bad time to mess with your hormones when you may have an infection down around there.
Alright, that sounds fine, it might be better to try the antibiotic first with the probiotics and wait to put the ring in until after you're better if you want.
Try not to freak out (easier said than done, right?) it won't help things! *hugs*

well when i had UC they would give me flaygl to help control flares and it was the one antibioitc i could always take.

Now, when you start birth control of any kind, you can expect break through bleeding for up to 6 months, usually about 2 depending on the type of method. Just cause of the way it changes your hormones.
An infection can also cause bleeding too.
Its probably a combo of the two.
Hope you feelbetter soon!

I don't think Flagyl will hurt your gut. It is for bacterial infections. You can't allow a bacterial infection to continue forever...
Diagnosed with mild proctitis in March 2007: Treated with Canasa (as needed)
December 08: Began treating with Asacol 400mg (9/day) + Canasa 2x/day - Anemic
May 09: Off Canasa, taking Asacol (9/day)
Back on Canasa every other night + Asacol (9/day) + Probiotics + Iron
Reducing to 6 Asacol/day + Canasa + Probiotics + Iron - So far so good!!! -SPOKE TOO SOON! Back to 9/day...

Does the Nuva ring have hormones in it? When I tried to go back on birth control, I had the worst flare I have ever had. Don't they treat C. diff infections with Flagyl? So, I am pretty sure that would not hurt your tummy. Best of luck to you.

yes it does, its just supposed to affect you less because it releases directly into your uterus instead of into your blood stream. however it has estrogen in it.
the ones with estrogen can (according to my GI a long time ago) can affect UC. However the ones with just progestren can sometimes help calm it. Thats why some women go into remission during pregnancy.
