Has anybody ever been on Cipro?  My GI put me on it for 10 days, along with Lialda.  I was feeling better; the intention was for the Cipro to help get it under control as the maintenance med kicked in.  However, I am afraid maybe I'm starting to 'slip' a little.  I don't think this warrants an emergency after hours call (I will call tomorrow); I did email my GI last week and asked if I should take another course of Cipro, but he must be out of town or something.  Has anyone ever used Cipro, in particular for longer than a 10 day course?  I figure, if it was working, it is probably better than Prednisone!  I know you can't be on a heavy duty antibiotic forever, but better than a heavy duty steriod??!  Any help/comments would be appreciated - thx....

Hi, klm, and welcome to HealingWell.

Usually the relief provided by Cipro is temporary, and continuing it longer term may even make your symptoms worse. Antibiotics kill off the normal, healthy bacteria our colons need to work right and can predispose us to clostridium difficil (c. diff.) colitis, which is difficult to treat and makes you very sick.

Are you taking a good probiotic? They can help replace the healthy bacteria in your colon and prevent c. diff.

Do call your doctor tomorrow. Since you're new to UC it's best to stay in close contact.

Yes Kim, I was on Cipro a few times for infections but my GI doctor always had me take Flagyl along with it.  Apparently, the Flagyl keeps the "good" bacteria from getting destroyed.  At least that is how my doctor explained it to me.  I was never on Cipro for longer than a day stretch.
