I don't know if any of you have a better understanding of this....

I've been thinking too much lately, I think. http://www.healingwell.com/community/emoticons/wink.gif

Many sources list stress as a contributor to IBD ("Listen to Your Gut,", etc.)

Stress is known to depress the immune system.

IBD is often cited as being a product of an overactive immune system.

So: how can stress, as something that depresses the immune system, be a cause of this condition which is a result of an overactive immune system?

My guess is that for all the above, "malfunctioning immune system" might be a better description (and
therefore perhaps the reason immuno-modulators do work for some people and not for others....?)

I'd better go read a novel or something and stop thinking! lol

I think it's just one part of the immune system that is overreacting. So maybe when you get stressed, it's depressing the other parts... and the stress might also irritate your bowel, making it more susceptible to what the other one part of the immune system is doing to it? I don't know lol.

Novels are always good =D and so is not stressing. Hey, go read to de-stress XD

It's a dysregulation of the immune system. There is an inappropriate inflammatory response to some of your gut flora which should be regulated but it isn't. Stress may affect how the immune system regulates itself.

A very good question and I was thinking on exactly same line. The attached picture (VIEW IMAGE) will tell you why its so. If you are not hardcore into science and don't get what all these factors are then its best explained by Capsid.

And yes, you are indeed right about not thinking. I am closely watching IBD research for last 2 years (and seriously considering post-doc in IBD) and IMHO, it has long way to go. At this moment, all of us should only think one, how to control the symptoms and be happy :)
Diagnosed with Ulcerative Colitis since 2006, at the age of 30 years

Currently taking
100mg of Azathiprine, twice a day
2250mg of Balsalazide Hydrochloride, 3X a day
10mg of Vit. B12, once a day
500mg Salazopyrine suppository once a day.

30mg/day of Prednisolone since 2009/08/21 to control recent flare up, will reduce the dose by 5mg each week. (hoping not to swell up)
