Abdominal cramps and gas are really bad and painful.  Does anyone know how to stop this?  I heard ginger and peppermint are good at soothing the stomach.  Does this help?

For cramps I use Bentyl which is a prescription I get from the doc and it works really well for me. For gas pains I use Gas-x. But yes peppermint is good too for settling the stomach but it doesn't really help with cramping and gas pain (at least for me anyway).

In theory, ginger and peppermint should not help you alleviate your stomach pain unless its acidity /gas related. If you have inflammatory referred pain then this is not a solution.

Don't want to hijack the thread. Yesterday, I had a nightmare with these stomach cramps that I could not do anything at work. Was just feeling like crying out. I asked my GI for this Bentyl thing today morning and he refused. His opinion was, I don't need it and if such pains show up again, I should go to emergency. (I don't live in the US)
I wonder if there is any criteria for this medicine?
Diagnosed with Ulcerative Colitis since 2006, at the age of 30 years

Currently taking
100mg of Azathiprine, twice a day
2250mg of Balsalazide Hydrochloride, 3X a day
10mg of Vit. B12, once a day
500mg Salazopyrine suppository once a day.

30mg/day of Prednisolone since 2009/08/21 to control recent flare up, will reduce the dose by 5mg each week. (hoping not to swell up)

My cramps and having the urge to go usually start after eating. I get this sour stomach, abdominal cramps and then I have to go very soon after that. It is horrible, but after I use the bathroom, I am pretty much oka.

mindstyle....your doc is an arse, and for cramping/spasming...he should be HAPPY to give you an antispasmodic. Why would you have to go to the emergency for that?????? doesn't make sense.

You say you're not in the US...what country do you live in? although it's your doc making the decision to say no.

If you have a GP, he/she could prescribe it for you....and you would only need a 10mg dosage to start anyway....

ucgirl71...it's normal for eating to trigger the digestive process (peristalsis) and for the stool that's sitting in the sigmoid to be on its way downloading getting ready for a bm..

It's also a good habit in the mornings after breakfast...I depend on that. Although if I'm flaring, I'll definitely have more bms in the morning.

But, if you're flaring, anything that's in the rectum (mucus/blood) will be the trigger ready to be evacuated upon the peristalsis starting by just getting up in the morning.

@ quincy,

I am in Sweden and my gastroenterologist is a really nice guy but he is on holidays this week. I called up the nurse and she talked to another doctor and he refused. My strong guess is, he didn't read my case and he doesn't know me personally. I am going to call her up next week to talk to the doctor. I had stomach cramps today too. I am so fed up, just can't work.

Chamomile tea is scientifically proven to aid with menstral cramps, so I'd try that..I don't get tummy pains with my IBD but on occassion with my periods I do and the tea works amazing, besides I drink it mostly everyday to aid with my IBD with it being antibacterial, antifungal and anti-inflammatory.
