I have been taking Prednisone for almost 3 weeks now. I'm having 6-8 BMs a day, That's the result of taking 2 Lomotil (2.5/0.025mg each) after breakfast. I feel better regarding bleeding, urgency and cramps but my GI doctor is not happy that I still go so many times a day.
She has asked me to stop taking Salofalk tablets and is pushing me to try Remicade.

I just wonder if anyone of you takes Asacol (Salofalk) while you are on Prednisone.

Asacol is a maintenance med so often people will take pred if while on Asacol they start to flare, in the hopes that the pred will stop the flare in it's tracks, taking both is not uncommon.

My doctor said if I still have so many BMs a day she will put me on IV steroid this weekend. What do you think?

I don't know, I've never had treatment that way, would that be prednilsone (sp?) cuz I think the liquid/IV version of pred is prednilsone...of course many docs have different ideas of treatment, how many trips/day are you making?

I go 3-5 times in the morning, then take 5mg Lomotil and is good till late afternoon/evening when I go another 3-5 times. I have both formed and loose BMs and just mucous,
I took another 2.5 mg Lomotil before I went to bed last night and I could use the Entocort enema again, retained it till 4:30 this morning.
You remember I said earlier that it's like putting iodine on a wound when I tried to use an enema 2 weeks ago? So I think I am getting better.

So basically on average you go about 10X/day...that's basically a moderate flare (just comparing to myself of course)...maybe try prednisone (pill form) first then see how that goes, then move onto prednilsone (liquid)...glad the stinging issue is getting better, I myself have only ever had success with cortifoam....salofalk never did a thing for me.

Good news is you do have some options, some different combos to play around with, I sure hope you find relief soon though.

Yes, about 10X/day WITH Lomotil.
I will phone my GI this morning to see what she wants me to do. When I was put on Prednisone for the first time in February 2008 my BMs were reduced to 3-5X/day (without Lomotil) after a couple of days. And that flare was even worse than the recent one. Funny disease.

That's pred for ya, it's considered a "bandaid" med it usually helps booster the maintenance meds.

Good luck, hope you find full remission soon and if so it's probably a really good idea to continue with your maintenance meds, many will drop them when they hit full remission only to end up flaring again shortly after.

Thank you.
I couldn't find my doctor today. So I will keep on with the oral Prednisone.
Actually do I need more than 35 mg/day? I weigh 95 pounds, (100 pounds pre-flare.)
And I wonder if I should taper only after my BMs are reduced to 3-5 times a day.

I don't know, I've always been put on 40mg for the first two weeks straight and then tapered after that by a pill a week until getting about 3 weeks left then tapering down by 1/2 a pill.

You want to be careful, you don't want to stay on a high dose of pred for too long, the side effects are sure to get you then and there can be long term side effects from being on high doses of pred for too long.
