Hello; This is my first post. Recently had both ends scoped and waiting for results. No blood, but several bathroom trips in the a.m. with them gradually getting worse as the morning goes by. Passing pure mucous made me finally see the GI. Has anyone had weird affects of the 5-asa? I am taking 2 pills 4 times a day and feel like !@#%. I wake up in the morning feeling great, eat well, look forward to the day, have my first B.M. (with no problems) and it all goes down hill from there! Any input would be great

Thanks

hi..welcome to the forum...love your ID!

Your symptoms sound normal for a flare, and I wouldn't be too quick to judge the 5ASA meds harshly as of yet. Actually, you should be on rectal meds as well if your rectum is involved.

Multiple bms are normal for an IBD flare, or even IBS.

When do you go back for your results? I would suggest you get a copy of each pathology report for your records....when the doc says all is fine, it's nice to know what that means exactly...

You might also consider to start a fibre supplement as well as probiotics.

How are you eating?  what's your diet consist of normally?

Thanks for the info: You were right ; the meds seem to be working better now and I get the results in 2 weeks.Normally ate well and occasionally supplemented with physillium (spelling?) when I felt lousy. Took some other on-line advice and stopped all alchohol, and change to mostly soluble fibres. Oatmeal and fruit (without the skin) and plain veg is helping. I juice veg every other day to try and get some more nutrition. Did not get much info from the doc and was sent home in a daze. I am treating myself better and it feels good. The only symptoms I had were after initial normal b.m more would follow( that were not fun at all!) Then the mucous came, and that was enough for me. Today is the first day in months that I have not had multiple morning bm's. Does 8 pills of 500mg Salofalk seem lots to anyone? Again I am new to this and I am anxious to hear my results.

P.S. Also eliminated most of the dairy as well, Fennel tea at night , All seem to help. Thanks to everyone

Hi...4000mg 5ASA is on the higher side, but not the highest...

Please get a copy of your pathology report.....for your records and your own research if need be. Better to be in the know of what's going on than not and left guessing.

Make a list of quetions to ask the doc so that you don't forget when you get there,

PLEASE ask to be put on rectal meds....In the US it's Rowasa, in Canada or other it's Salofalk or Pentasa (and sometimes Asacol foam..wish we had that in Canada).

You're improving....take that learning as to how your flares work....it is what it is and that's a good thing.

I'm going in a week for my next c-scope and will be on pins and needles for the results as well...and that'll be my 8th (or 9th..can't remember) since diagnosis.

Try to eat as normally as you can, as balanced as possible.
