Hello,

I know alot of you recommend trying fibre. Is metamucil a good one? Do you find fibre helps a bit, not much, or very noticeable? I am thinking of trying it out.

Also, do you find any red meat tolerable? What about something more tender like lamb? I am wanting to add just a bit to get some iron. I know I don't do so hot with roast beef n stuff.

Let me know - thanks

Ive personally not had any issues eating red meat. My advice is to try a little bit and see how it goes. As far as fiber supplement, Ive always taken metamucil.

I don't have any problems with red meat. Then again, I haven't found any foods that bother me.

I take metamucil, have daily for 23 years. I believe it helps me. When I have to go off in preparation for a colonoscopy my stools are less formed and more uncomfortable moving through.

Sometimes red meat seems to bother me, sometimes it doesn't. I think the fattier the meat is the worse it is for me; the leaner, the better. I know my GI always said to stay away from fatty foods as being more difficult to digest, so this makes sense. It's surprised me the difference I've felt in digestion even, say, among kinds of beef. I had a slice of very lean beef tenderloin a few weeks ago and it digested better than a lot of other things!
There's so much experimentation to do....!

I am thinking of trying the fibre..just afraid of bloating or speeding up the digestive tract. Any thoughts? Sounds like it works for you songlady

While flaring, I cannot tolerate high fiber foods.  I have to stick to a low residue diet.  I do add a tablespoon of Red Mill ground flaxseed meal to my cereal in the morning.
I attribute this flare (winding down after suffering for three months) to eating too much red meat while on vacation....pizza, steak...etc..ugh.  I should know better.

Diagnosed with ulcerative proctitis in 1998 in hospital
Hospitalized (2nd time) in May 2008 for ten days.
Remission Nov 08 thru May of 09.
Slowly coming out of flare.  Meds: Colazal (6 per day), prednisone 10 mgm and tapering weekly, Cort enema nightly, Canasa in morning, Benicar 20 mg for BP, flaxseed oil 3 x a day, fishoil 2 x a day, probiotic 3 x a day, calcium with D 1x a day and multivitamin.
Doctor had me on 100 mgm of 6MP which drastically lowered my white count.  Now off the 6MP pending results of repeat white count. UGH.
